Former darling of the US tennis circuit - Andy Roddick - is winning over fans after being written off

IT IS a good job that Andy Roddick was born in Nebraska rather than Oxfordshire. If the somewhat chippy American had been forced to endure what Tim Henman had to put up with throughout his career, he might have thrown in the towel years ago.
While the British tend to place their sporting heroes under rather than on a pedestal, the Americans get excited about any local man with an ounce of talent and while Henman spent a lifetime being expected to fail, every American with a racket is exp

ected to win the Open and go on to conquer the world. As a result, Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion and 2006 finalist, is used to being lauded and applauded, so when he was all but written off before his second-round match at this year's Open, he was mightily miffed. Luckily for him, that was just the fillip he needed to push him past Ernests Gulbis 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5 in the early hours of yesterday morning.Roddick had pinned everything on having a decent run in New York after a summer of injury and disappointment. A shoulder injury forced him out the French Open, a tentative and dismal display saw him register his worst result at Wimbledon by losing in the second round to Janko Tipsarevic and he skipped the Olympics in order to prepare for the Open. Unfortunately, his journey through the American hard-court events did not bring the rewards he had wished for and by the time he lost in the quarter-finals of the Washington event to Viktor Troicki, he could take no more and sacked his brother, John, who had been working as his coach. That split came six months after Roddick and Jimmy Connors parted company and, running out of people to turn to for guidance, he persuaded Patrick McEnroe, the US Davis Cup captain, to guide him through this tournament. But, with all his other responsibilities, McEnroe can only give Roddick a couple of weeks of his time and he is not a permanent solution to Roddick's coaching problem. The confidence of America's former darling, then, was not at its highest as he arrived in Flushing Meadows but even so, the whispers and mutterings he heard before the Gulbis match were more than he could stand.

Mauresmo tosses Coin out in third round in us open

NEW YORK, Aug 30 (Reuters) - They grew up in the same region in France and honed their skills in the same club but Amelie Mauresmo had never seen Julie Coin play until two days ago.
When she did catch sight of Coin, Mauresmo saw her fellow Frenchwoman cause the biggest shock at this year's U.S. Open by knocking out top seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round.
However, Coin could not keep up her heroics for a second match running and bowed out on Saturday following a 6-4 6-4 defeat by the former world number one.
"Strange thing was I don't know her and I'd never seen her play," the 29-year-old Mauresmo told reporters after reaching the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in over a year.
"She's younger and we grew up in the same area and everything but our roads never crossed really except when maybe she was 12 or 14 or whatever.
"So it was strange to have some similarities but not knowing each other. I didn't really know what to expect I just saw a couple of games on TV against Ivanovic and that was it."
Thursday was the first time when most of the tennis world had first set their eyes on Coin as before this week, she had never played a tour-level match.
Ranked 188th, Coin became the lowest ranked woman ever to beat a world number one and was disappointed not to replicate the feat against

Nagarujuna turns 49

Hyderabad, Aug 29: He is just shy of 50, yet he is still the romantic ‘king’ of Tollywood. Akkineni Nagarjuna turns 49 on August 29 and this birthday is very special to him. His son Naga Chaitanya is making debut as a hero in a few days and he is all set to introduce Chaitanya to the media.
He will be launching his son’s maiden film on his father ANR’s birthday on September 20th. On the other hand, Nagarjuna is currently working for King being directed by Sreenu Vytla.
Nagarjuna says he will not stop doing romantic entertainers for which he is famous as his son is entering into the field. He is ready to face competition coming from home itself. “I may not be running around the trees but I won’t stop doing love stories,” he said.
We wish the path-breaking star of Tollywood a very Happy Birthday.

‘Shah Rukh Can’ do almost anything except…

Mumbai, Aug 29: Shah Rukh Khan is looked up to in the film industry for his phoenix like quality - he is a fighter, a survivor and a go-getter. He is a winner for life! The very successful King Khan lives life king size with love of his life, Gauri Khan and two kids. The god of big screen, who is known to have the Midas touch can handle almost everything, except one – salt in his food. Well, this truth is relatively unknown, but has been revealed by SRK’s dearest friend, Mushtaq Sheikh in his latest book on SRK, ‘Shah Rukh Can’. Mushtaq Sheikh’s earlier biography, ’Still Reading Khan’, had generated an overwhelming response. Mushtaq says, ’'I have realized that there is nothing that Shah Rukh can’t (do) and hence the title, Shah Rukh Can! But he goes on to add that there is one thing that even Bollywood’s global superstar can’t handle and that is too much salt in his food. In fact, Shiekh informs that even if there is a little extra salt, King Khan won’t eat it.” Well, so we know that SRK likes ‘Namak Kam’ in his food. And to know more on what ‘Shah Rukh Can’, grab a copy of the latest book.

Cricket-India win first one-day series in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led India to their maiden one-day series triumph in Sri Lanka, winning the fourth one-day international by 46 runs to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka were once again let down by their top order batting and succumbed for 212 all out chasing India's score of 258.
Only Sanath Jayasuriya with a quickfire 60 off 52 balls including eight fours and two sixes and a late bash by tailender Thilan Thushara who scored 40 off 29 balls with two sixes and two fours, prolonged the end.
The spin of Harbhajan Singh (3-40) and Yuvraj Singh (2-53) accounted for the Sri Lankan wickets. They found appreciable turn from the pitch that was used for the third one-day game played on Sunday.
Dhoni and Suresh Raina hit their second back-to-back fifties and shared in a fourth-wicket stand of 143 off 141 balls to carry India to 258 all out after the Indian captain had won his fourth successive toss of the series.
Man-of-the-match Raina said his game was in good shape "thanks to the back room support from Robin (Singh), Gary (Kirsten) and Paddy Upton.
"They gave us a lot of support. We had lots of good practice sessions in Sri Lanka and we have come up with a very good team. Hopefully we will maintain the same intensity in international matches now."
Virat Kohli set the pace for the pair by scoring his maiden one-day half-century and sharing an opening partnership of 44 with Gautam Gambhir

'Om Shanti Om' reached a final round in the Olympics
IndiaGlitz [Friday, August 29, 2008]

There is one more achievement for India other than one gold and two bronze medals in the recently concluded Beijing Olympics.
Any guesses?
It has got nothing to do with sports and is related to music.
The Israeli gymnastic team comprising of Katarina Pisetsky, Veronika Vitenberg, Olena Dvornichenko, Maria Savenkov and Rahel Vigdozchik moved their beautiful sculpted bodies to the tune of a hit Bollywood film song in their final round of competition.
The song was 'Dhoom Tana' from the blockbuster 'Om Shanti Om'.
This happened during the final days of the Olympics.
No one in India knew before the start of the final round that this song was selected by the Israeli team and what led to this particular track to be selected for the performance is also not yet known.
Let the Israeli team members say it themse

On his arrival, a reception was held in Thompson's honour by several leading senators and businessmen, including House majority whip James Clyburn.

Chiru’s party name runs into trouble

NEW DELHI, Aug 28 (PTI): Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s bid for Election Commission’s nod for his newly-launched political outfit "Praja Rajyam" appears to have run into trouble as someone else has already sought registration of his party of the same name. A resident of Cuddapah district in Andhra Pradesh has already filed an application before the Election Commission seeking to register his party in the same name. EC sources said the Cuddapah resident has filed his application three or four months ago and the EC has also processed his application. The Commission also sent a reply to him. Sources said the Commission was yet to examine the application of the megastar who moved the Commission on August 26 to register his new political outfit as Praja Rajyam. "The Commission will take another a week to process the application of Chiranjeevi," the sources said. The cine star announced the name of his political party at a mammoth public rally in the temple town of Tirupati.

When Amitabh had London audiences on their feet

Mumbai, Aug 28 (IANS): Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan says he was overwhelmed by the "unprecedented" response of the crowds in London when he performed there with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai.
History was made at the 02 Arena in London Sunday when the Bachchans performed along with stars like Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta and Riteish Deshmukh as part of their ’Unforgettable’ world tour - the 20,000-strong audience was on their feet most of the time! "What you’ve heard is absolutely right. This is unprecedented and overwhelming. I’ve never gone through this experience before. Throughout my performance at the 02 Arena, the audience didn’t sit at all. All 20,000 of them stood on their feet while I performed," Amitabh told IANS on phone from London. "It was a deeply moving and humbling experience. I’ve never been in a performance like this ever. And perhaps the audience too had never felt like this before. The entire venue was sold out. We all got standing ovations. The audience just freaked out," he added. In every city that the Bachchans performed in the US, the West Indies and Britain, the Big B was by far the main attraction with Abhishek and Aishwarya forming the sidelights. Said Preity Zinta: "Let’s admit it, the crowds came in such huge numbers mainly to see the Big B. We were the side attractions. The way the audiences everywhere reacted to him had to be seen to be believed." Even Shilpa, who joined the Bachchans in London, agreed, saying: "The Big B is such a rock star. Performing with him was an eye-opener."

Michael Jackson, once pop’s Peter Pan, turns a sad 50

Santa Maria (California), Aug 28 (DPA): The gates of Michael Jackson’s Neverland were locked shut this week. The funfair was idle and the animals from the private zoo were long gone.
As the former King of Pop was set to mark his 50th birthday Friday it seemed fitting that the extravagant estate built as his homage to a fantasy of childhood remained empty - a site irrevocably tied to his financial and legal troubles, a symbol of a strange star’s downfall. This was meant to be Jackson’s refuge - a place where he could play with children who were the age he was when he became a professional singer at 11. His goal seemed to be to recover that lost childhood. But it turned sour. He was accused of two instances of child molestation at Neverland, in 1993 and 2003. Although he settled the first case without any admission of wrongdoing and was cleared of all charges after a media-saturated trial in the second case, the ordeals wreaked havoc on his already fragile psyche and turned him into a freak in the world’s celebrity sideshow. So there were no parties there this week, no stadium concerts like Madonna - the Queen of Pop who turned 50, 13 days before Jackson - and celebrated while on her wildly lucrative "Sweet and Sticky" world tour. Like Madonna, Jackson turned the 1980s pop world on its head, selling more than 100 million copies of the album "Thriller" in 1982, and introducing new dance moves, new sounds and a new level of mega-stardom. Jackson has blamed his problems on the challenges of being a child star - one of nine musical siblings and the star of the Jackson Five long before he reached puberty. He had monster hits like ABC and "I’ll Be There" with his siblings, but changed the entire industry with hits such as "Thriller," "Off the Wall," "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". These songs redefined the modern music video and forced MTV to start showing black performers, ensuring the success of the fledgling music station and paving the way for the acceptance of rap and hip- hop as mainstream musical styles. But gradually Jackson created less hits and more tabloid headlines thanks to his odd behaviour and plastic surgery. His two- year marriage to Lisa-Marie Presley sparked intense speculation. Then he married his nurse Debbie Rowe, who became the mother of his two older children. The mother of his third child has never been identified. Whereas once he was widely seen as the best dancer in the entertainment world, his most recent public appearance saw him confined to a wheelchair on a Las Vegas shopping trip with his three children Prince I, 11, Prince II, 6, and daughter Paris, 10. He was wearing slippers and pyjamas, and the ever-present facial mask which either shields him from pollution or hides the damage that excessive plastic surgery has wrought on his face. Talk about a comeback has been floating around for years as Jackson juggles huge debts yet remains one of the most intriguing celebrities in the world. The most persistent rumours suggest a series of residency concerts at a Vegas venue. Other reports involve the construction of a Thriller casino and entertainment venue, or "Cirque du Soleil" show based on his roster of hits. But deal after deal has reportedly fallen through because of Jackson’s weak mental state and inability to function normally.

India beat Sri Lanka, clinch ODI series

Colombo, Aug 27 (IANS): India recorded their first bilateral series win against Sri Lanka on Sri Lankan soil when they wrapped up the five-match series with a game to go at the R. Premadasa Stadium here Wednesday.
The Indians set the Sri Lankans a target of 259 in 50 overs and won by 46 runs as the hosts were bowled out for 212 with 21 balls to spare. Mahela Jayawardene, who had become the first Sri Lankan captain to lose a home series to England last year, added a first ever series defeat to India at home too to his resume after the tourists took a 3-1 lead. Veteran left-hander Sanath Jayasuriya set it up nicely for the Sri Lankans when he thrashed a typical aggressive 60 in 52 balls with eight boundaries and two sixes, but the rest of the batsmen blew it away as they had done all throughout the series, failing to provide any resistance. The hosts replaced a steady opener in Malinda Warnapura to partner Jayasuriya, but that made no difference as the left-hander failed to add anything to the Sri Lankan total. He spent 31 minutes at the crease and saw the Sri Lankan total move to 28, but he was on zero and was ruled out leg before wicket to Munaf Patel. Munaf also came back to remove Kumar Sangakkara, who dragged one onto the stumps having made just six. Jayasuriya, meanwhile, was in great nick and when he added 36 runs for the third wicket in 39 balls with Jayawardene, it looked as if the Sri Lankans had turned the tide. To stop the run flow, Dhoni introduced Harbhajan Singh and the off-spinner got sufficient turn to trouble the batsman. He got the prize wicket of Jayasuriya when the left-hander tried to tap away a flighted delivery for a single, but ended up getting a leading edge and Suresh Raina at slip did spectacularly well to dive to his left and take the catch. With the side in trouble, Jayawardene went for a suicidal single to short fine leg, but failed to beat Virat Kohli’s throw and was run out. Harbhajan also accounted for struggling middle order batsman Tillekeratne Dilshan for 12 to make it 131 for five and to make things worse, Sri Lanka lost Chamara Kapugedara soon, this time due to an error of judgment by umpire Billy Doctrove. Like he has done all through the series, Thilan Tushara Mirando, who had earlier claimed his first ever five-wicket haul in ODIs, was involved in a lone battle, but he was only delaying the inevitable. He was the last man to be dismissed after scoring 40 runs in only 29 balls with two boundaries and two sixes. It was a great win by the young Indian side, especially in the context that they had lost two of their key player, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, due to injury and after losing the first ODI by eight wickets, they fought back remarkably to inflict an embarrassing defeat on their neighbours. The Indian total was possible thanks to half-centuries by Suresh Raina (76) and M.S. Dhoni (71), who fought hard to give the tourists a total above 250.

Blowing hot and cold

It is a cool title and is about how five guys and a girl, all in their teens, spend their lives in a boarding school in a wooded hill station. It is a film for the youth. The average age of my actors is 17 and they are all new faces,” explains Anita Udeep, an engineer-turned-director. She is not new to cinema, having directed an English film titled Knock, Knock, I’m looking to Marry (2003), which was followed by a 3D animation film called Gulliver Travels (2006). Anita has also sung the hit number Azhagia Asura in the Tamil film Whistle. The pretty writer and director also understands the pulse of today’s youth, as she constantly monitors their likes and dislikes in film viewing. Anita runs the 10-screen Mayajaal multiplex, considered to be one of the most successful multiplexes in India. Sitting in her posh office and going through the box-office collections on her laptop, Anita says, The time is ripe in Kollywood to make something different within the commercial format. That is why I ventured into making Kulir. Our audience research has shown us that they are willing to try out something unusual. Take a look at the collection figures of a host of new films in Hindi and Tamil that people said would not click. At the end of the day, they have worked big time. It has given me the courage to make my kind of movie.” Anita’s kind of movie is Kulir 100 Degrees, as the title indicates it’s both cold and hot which means that opposites attract, the basic framework of the film. “The film is a youth-oriented story using their lingo and trying to tell things their way. The guys in my film come from different strata of society. One guy is from a village in Theni, while another is from a posh area of Chennai. The audience can relate to each and every character, giving the film an universal appeal. The film goes through four seasons, and is made like a musical entertainer with comedy, emotions and suspense,” says the lady director. She has picked a Delhi girl Ria as the heroine while the hero is a Tamilian Sanjiv from Coimbatore, who has done the offbeat Malayalam film Apoorva. There are six songs in the film, the music for which has been composed by Sasi, son of Murali of the famous Sabesh-Murali team. The film is being shot in Super-35 mm, by cameraman Vijay, an assistant of Aravind Krishna. Anita has shot the film in some exotic locations in Switzerland, Kulu, Manali, Yercaud and Ooty on a budget of Rs three crore. Anita adds, “The packaging looks glossy and will attract our target audience — the youth. There is no glamour or skin show in the film. This will be a racy entertainer which will keep the audience engrossed.”

Salman Khan beats Ash-Hrithik!

Salman Khan beat Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan hands down by shooting the most expensive Hindi film number ever. The song of Salman’s forthcoming film, Anil Sharma’s Veer cost the makers Rs 3.5 crore. Thus, it became the costliest, overtaking Ash-Hrithik’s Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah from Jodhaa Akbar, which had cost Rs 2 crore to its producers. Estop: Salman speaks up! REVIEW: GOD TUSSI The song was picturised at Mehboob Studios, Mumbai on Salman Khan, the unnamed debutante female lead (who apparently resembles Katrina), Mithun Chakraborty and Sohail Khan. Over 700 junior artistes were also used and it took 11 days to complete. The Jodhaa Akbar song had been picturised at Karjat with 2,000 junior artistes in 20 days. Sharma, who’s made some of the costliest Bollywood films, says, "Yes, it’s true. The song cost us Rs 3.5 crore which included the sets and expensive costumes of main as well as junior artistes. This song is one of the highlights of this film." On the new girl opposite Sallu, he says, "The heroine has been finalised and has already participated in this song, but we have not yet finalised her screen name."

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ stalled!

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is in trouble. PVR Pictures has filed a petition against Rajkumar Santoshi, the director of the film being produced by Tips, restraining him from working on any films other than theirs. The first schedule for APKGK had just recently begun. PVR Pictures (Taare Zameen Par, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) has moved the Mumbai High Court in a bid to make Santoshi honor the terms of contract between them that forbids him to take up any other work till principal photography of two films that he is working on with them is over! Industry sources informed, "Few months back, PVR Pictures signed up Santoshi to direct two films for them: a film based on Emperor Ashoka and a romantic comedy titled Backstreet Boys. Ajay Devgan was slated to play the title role in Ashoka and Santoshi even started pre-production work on the film. PVR was very keen to begin both the projects together. But then with Backstreet Boys not taking off, Ashoka too was stalled. Santoshi meanwhile began shooting Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, toplining Ranbir and Katrina. PVR Pictures is now claiming that Santoshi sold the script of Backstreet Boys to Tips as Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani! The next date for hearing in this case is September 1st." Santoshi has the dubious distinction of frequently getting mired in court cases. Just a few years back Tips had dragged him to court after he had overshot the budget of The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Also, Keshu Ramsay, who produced Santoshi directed Khakee and Family: Ties of Blood, had taken him to court over money matters. While the Tips case seems to have been resolved, as Santoshi is directing the aforementioned film for them, the Keshu Ramsay case is still on in the Mumbai High Court.

Vidya's new attempt at sexy

Vidya Balan is a becoming a classic example of someone who loves to minimise their strength at the cost of maximising their weakness. We all loved her ethereal beauty in "Parineeta" and the girl-next-door charm in Lage Raho Munnabhai. So why is so keen on being sexy, flirty and everything else that she just cannot at the cost of discarding all that worked for her?She tried reinventing herself in "Heyy Baby" and "Kismat Konnection", and neither of the efforts worked. In fact, both came under heavy criticism. But not one to relent so easily, Vidya is back. We are now seeing her on the cover of the India edition of FHM or For Him Magazine, a leading men's magazine, which has featured hotties like Katrina and Bipasha on its cover in recent months. "In bed with Vidya Balan" cries the cover headline, accompanied by a photo of the actress hanging on to a satin bed sheet. The interview has her talking about men and how she loves to flirt with those she wants to give attention to; being served a sugary and sweet breakfast in bed by a man; and, of course, Shahid Kapur."He's my co-star and we get along really well. So all the women reading this can be happy and can continue having their crush on him," she says about Shahid, who anyway has reportedly moved on in life.Well, on the cover she looks as stiff, self conscious and lacking self belief in what she's doing, as she did in "Kismat Konnection". And the interview? A rather desparate attempt to come across as "with it".

"The party will work for development, modernisation and industrial revolution. Its goal will be santosh and ananda (contentment and happiness) of Andhra Pradesh," he said amid loud cheers from an estimated million people gathered from across Andhra Pradesh. Chiranjeevi told his fans that he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the support and told the people that he knows what Andhra wants. He called it his ‘duty to serve the people of Andhra Pradesh’. Broadly outlining the policies of his eagerly awaited party, he said that eliminating poverty, ensuring social equality, rooting out corruption, development of villages on par with urban areas, and providing health and education to all would top the agenda. Chiru, who declared that he had no rivals in politics, took a swipe at the ruling Congress for selling government land to industries and for acquiring cultivable land for Special Economic Zones (SEZs). “We have no rivals. Problems are our rivals. We have no rivals because we have no fear and greed. We have entered the battlefield but our battle is against problems. Courage and honesty are our two weapons. We have no leader. All are soldiers. I am also one among you,” he said. The 53-year-old Megastar and son of a police constable outlined his party’s vision in various sectors and also unveiled the party flag — green and white with the sun

Muralitharan leaves India reeling in first test

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan snared four wickets to leave India struggling on 159 for six when bad light ended play early on the third day of the first test on Friday.
Muralitharan claimed the wickets of Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Dinesh Karthik to leave the tourists with tough fight to save the follow on in replying to Sri Lanka's 600 for six declared.
At stumps VVS Laxman was 19 not out and captain Anil Kumble was on one.

Youngsters look to grab headlines in indian cricket

Virat Kohli: Bit of a surprise selection, Virat Kohli, like many youngsters in India, has already seen top-level cricket on the domestic front, and pretty competitive contests in the Indian Premier League. So his initiation into the big league may not be such a daunting task for the Delhi batsman, who made a name for himself as captain of the Under-19 India team that won the World Cup in Kuala

First learn how to act, Aamir to Jiah Khan!

Mumbai, August 21: There is a strong buzz that Aamir Khan send his Ghajini co-star Jiah to acting classes before her shooting for the film began. Giving confirmation to this is none other than actress Kangana Ranaut. Kangana and Jiah have been at a war of words for sometime now and this time Kangana has openly commented on Jiah’s non-acting skills. Ghajini has two heroines opposite Aamir in the film. One is Asin who has played the same part in the original Tamil version whereas the second lead now is Nishabd starlet Jiah Khan. It is common knowledge that Kangana was the first choice for Aamir opposite him in Ghajini. But she leaked out the news to the press before the formal announcement which annoyed Aamir and out she was of the film. At the last minute Jiah was roped in. Kangana was dejected and very hurt more so because not only she was a senior to Jiah but also considered herself a better actress than her having got critical acclaim for her debut film, Gangster and also Life In A Metro and Woh Lamhe. But as in the case of sour grapes, Kangana has been leaving no opportunity behind to lash out at Jiah. Jiah too is being equally venomous about Kangana in her interviews. Just recently they both even fought over their dress designer! Now when our source asked Kangana how she felt about missing out on working with Aamir in Ghajini, she replied back saying sometimes its destiny but at least I wasn’t sent to acting classes by Aamir when he had selected me like he sent Jiah. He was confident about my acting skills!

‘My father will be a great politician’ - Srija

Srija about her dad Megastar Chiranjeevi: As an actor My father considered my birth lucky for him. Because it was only after I was born that he started getting good cine offers. I have watched a few of his Telugu films and enjoyed watching them. I always liked him on screen as he is a natural actor. I like the ease with which he delivers his dialogues. He has essayed innumerable roles, but the one I remember is his character in the Telugu movie, Daddy, where he played the role of a father. His acting was incredible. Also, the plot of the movie is so similar to my real life story, that it touched my heart. Dad would also take me along to the sets. As a father Frankly, I like the ‘dad’ part of him more than his ‘actor’ persona. He’d never bring his work home— so we never discussed movies. He was a different person at home — a great father. He always gave me whatever I wanted. My birthdays were always very special. He would load me with gifts — each year, he’d increase the number of gifts, coinciding with my age. My only regret is that that he didn’t give me that one gift I asked him for — on my last birthday, when I turned 19. I asked him to give me Shirish, who is my husband now. Otherwise he has fulfilled all my dreams and has given me the best things in life. As he used to be very busy shooting, we hardly ever saw him at home. But even in those hectic days, he was very loving and caring. I remember how he would come back from shooting late in the night, wake me up and sit and have dinner with me. Sometimes, he’d ask me to make his favourite — omelette-bread — for breakfast. But, he never wanted his daughter to get into acting. He wanted to see me settled and leading a normal life. Now, he’s a grandfather too. He says he is very happy. My daughter is the first grandchild of the family. I hope for his good wishes.

Hot date with Bipasha awaits Vijender if he wins gold

Mumbai, Aug 22: Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu has offered to go on a date with Indian boxer Vijender Kumar if he wins gold at the Beijing Olympics. Kumar, 23, assured himself of at least a bronze medal when he outpointed Ecuador’s Carlos Goncora in the middleweight quarterfinals on Wednesday. Now, he’s two bouts away from Olympic gold and a “hot” date with one of Bollywood’s most glamorous heroines. “I have heard that Vijender told the media that I am his favourite actress,” Basu told reporters on Thursday. “Well, let me tell him that if he wins the gold medal for India, I will go on a hot date with him.” Up next for the handsome pugilist from Haryana, a part-time model, is a bout against Cuba’s Emilio Correa. “I just want to wish him all the best for his semifinal bout, and I hope he comes home with the gold,” Basu said.

What rivals have that iPhone doesn’t

Aug 23 (IndiaTimes): The release of 3G iPhone has once again refueled the raging mobile battle. It has renewed the fight which has been on since January 2007 (at MacWorld), when Steve Jobs first showcased his touchscreen magic to the world. Jobs keynote address at MacWorld woke up the telecom world to a new opponent and since then the cellphone manufacturers have been on their toes to develop a formidable iPhone rival. Almost all top cellphone makers, including the mobile giant Nokia either have an iPhone rival ready or are vigorously working on the same. Companies are leaving no stone unturned to dissuade Apple from taking over the cell phone market. Case in point is the unveiling of Nokia N96 two days prior to Apple iPhone’s official release in India. So, here’s looking into all where and how these hottest competitors manage to score over iPhone. 3G iPhone comes in 8GB and 16GB models, and with no expandable memory. While its rivals, Nokia N96 and Samsung Omnia offer higher storage. Nokia N96 offers memory expansion of up to 24GB. This smartphone packs 16GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 24GB. According to Nokia, the phone can store up to 60 hours of video or 20 full-length movies. The 24GB N96 can store up to 18000 songs and up to 20000 images. Similarly, the Samsung Omina has same storage variants, 8GB and 16 GB, and it also allows users to expand memory. In the days when 5-7 megapixel camera seems to have become a rule, Apple iPhone’s 2 megapixel seems pale. Its closest rival, Nokia N96 boasts of 5 megapixel camera with

Chiru affect: No room for pilgrims in Tirupati!

TIRUPATI: Megastar Chiranjeevi’s formal political debut at the mega public meeting here on August 26 has created accommodation scarcity in the temple town. Not fewer than 60,000 pilgrims from different parts of the country and even abroad turn up every day in Tirupati on pilgrimage to Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara. Hotels and lodges, and other commercial establishments in the town thrive mainly on the patronage of the pilgrims. It has become particularly hard to find accommodation in Tirumala and at Tirumala during festivals and during consecutive holidays, and even during some weekends. Tirupati being an educational hub and spiritual centre, the town witnesses a steady stream of scientists and scholars round the year. That being the situation in the normal days, it has now become harder in the past one week for pilgrims, the newlyweds and their relatives in particular, to find accommodation in any hotel or lodge thanks to the maiden public meeting on August 26 by politician Chiranje

Is Balakrishna doing YS Jagan’s film?

The buzz is that Kadapa Mayor Ravindra Reddy, who earlier produced Yogi with Prabhas, is all getting ready for his next film. If the sources are to be believed Balakrishna will play lead role in this film and Tamil director Lingu Swamy, who directed few hit films, Run, Pandem Kodi etc... will directing this film.
The gossips further add that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy son of Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy will present the movie. It may be noted that Jagan was once President of Kadapa district Balakrishna Fans Association.

Chiranjeevi hosts tea party for filmstars

Hyderabad: Megastar Chiranjeevi, who has stepped into politics, hosted a tea party for the film fraternity at the Rama Naidu studios at Jubilee Hills on Saturday. Prominent among those who attended the party were Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, Tarun, Rama Naidu, Tammareddy Bharadwaja, B Gopal, Raghavendra Rao and Kodandarami Reddy. Interestingly, actor Mohan Babu who is known to have a running a feud with Chiranjeevi also came for the tea party. "He invited me with love and I came," Mohan Babu said. Balakrishna and Jr. NTR from the Nandamuri clan were conspicuous by their absence. Recently, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu has pulled in NTR family members into the active politics to try out their charisma against the Chiranjeevi factor. Addressing the film fraternity, actor Chiranjeevi said that even in his political life, he will see to it that the film fraternity gets its due respect. He also explained why he was getting into politics. The pleasant meeting was not without hiccups though. Some Chiru fans tried to gatecrash the party and reached within touching distance of the man they adored. Taken aback, Chiranjeevi walked away with the help of those around him but returned quickly to greet them. But for the media, it turned out to be an exasperating evening with the organisers disallowing journalists.

Bhuma couple joins Chiru

Hyderabad, Aug 21 (Hindu): Kurnool strongman Bhuma Nagi Reddy and his wife Shobha Nagi Reddy on Wednesday joined the yet-to-be-named party of Megastar Chiranjeevi, who called for bringing about a “seachange” in the political culture of the State, including Rayalaseema region, known for faction feuds. Welcoming the couple, he said they decided to join him, impressed with his ideas and goals of ushering in a change. He said there should be a change in the ‘political culture’ and politics must be a tool for uplifting the people. Answering a spate of questions from reporters, Mr. Nagi Reddy said they were not aspiring for positions and had impressed upon Mr. Chiranjeevi the need to remove the backwardness of Rayalaseema region. Poverty remained at the same level and justice was not rendered, in particular, to minorities and Backward Classes in the region. This was brought to the notice of Mr. Chiranjeevi, “who spoke frankly to us” and declared that he wanted to serve the poor, he added. ‘Shanti yatras’
Replying to a question, he said the people of Rayalaseema were seeking development and nobody was in favour of a separate State. He parried a question on factions saying “you (media) still have an old mindset. There is lot of change and yet you say there is factionalism

Congress, TDP claim advantage because of Chiru entry

Hyderabad, Aug 21 (Hindu): Even as Megastar Chiranjeevi is busy inducting senior leaders from other political leaders after announcing his political entry, rivals Congress and Telugu Desam have gone into a quick impact-assessment mode and interestingly come up with the common claim of advantage, though for different reasons. For three days now, senior leaders of both parties seemed to be caught in a race, first in playing down the impact of Chiranjeevi’s entry on their respective parties and then passing on the vote-incursion buck to the other. Each one has a political theory for its claim. Seniors in the Congress estimate that they stood to gain from the film star’s entry as he would effectively split the Opposition vote, mainly Telugu Desam, as indicated by the steady stream of leaders leaving that party. On the other hand, TDP seniors argue that Chiranjeevi’s party would fill the cup of woes for the Congress adding to its anti-incumbency baggage. Their initial assessment is that people belonging to Kapu community in Coastal Andhra would be his mainstay, to begin with, however much the film star dislikes being portrayed like that.

The Emraan-Mallika war!

Mumbai, Aug 20 (INDIATIMES MOVIES) It's a known fact that actors Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat just can't stand each other. And while Emraan has made some nasty remarks about Sherawat, the sherni too hasn't been too kind towards him. And while they swear never to act with each other, we find out that the two are constantly squabbling about who shares a better relationship with Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, who gave them their debut. A common friend of the two tells us, "Emraan is Bhatt's nephew, and Mahesh Bhatt at the same time is extremely fond of Mallika, and either of them doesn't like it when the other is showered with

Chiru flicks ‘moral’ aims

Hyderabad, Aug 21 (Deccan): Superstar Chiranjeevi’s announcement that he would only do “educative” and “well-intentioned” films in the future has been taken with a pinch of salt by the film fraternity. Truly, Chiranjeevi has not been like other actors who have prepared their way to politics through carefully crafted films. As such, film buffs and industrywallahs can cite only one “educative” film which he has done so far—Rudraveena. Directed by Mr K. Balachander, the film propounded strong messages against evils such as caste discrimination, illiteracy and alcoholism. It also highlighted self reliance and gram swaraj. The protagonist played by Chiranjeevi hails from an orthodox Brahmin family but marries a Dalit woman to herald social change in his village. Chiranjeevi’s brother Nagababu produced this well-meaning film. Despite receiving critical acclaim and getting a national award, the film bombed at box office. This happened in 1990. Chiranjeevi the actor learned lessons from this “educative” endeavour and went only for full-scale commercial fare after that, including his last film in 2007, Shankardada Zindabad. One of his blockbusters Tagore had a theme against corruption but nobody would dare to call the masala entertainer an educative film.

Zaheer Khan helps India level the series

Dambulla: Inspired by a game-breaking spell from Zaheer Khan, India clinched a low-scoring contest here at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium on Wednesday, evening the five-match series at 1-1 — an eventuality that had appeared remote after Sri Lanka’s overwhelming win in the first ODI. After M.S. Dhoni won the toss, Zaheer extracted Sri Lanka’s three best batsmen — Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Sanath Jayasuriya — to help India bowl the host out for 142 in 38.3 overs. The left-armer, who finished with four wickets for 21 runs, was well supported by his new-ball partner, Praveen Kumar, who scalped three.
The chase of 143 appeared in the brambles, when Nuwan Kulasekara removed Irfan Pathan, opening in place of Gautam Gambhir (stiff neck), and Suresh Raina before the lunch break, and again when Thilan Thushara’s double strike left India on 75 for five. The men who stepped up were Virat Kohli, Dhoni and debutant S. Badrinath. Kohli’s 37 was a fighter’s innings, not always pretty or technically assured, but combative as a bulldog. His partnerships of 36 with Yuvraj Singh and 23 with Dhoni, while not substantial, nudged India closer. The 19-year-old Kohli handled Mendis positively, thinking little of crashing the mystery spinner through the off-side or slog-sweeping him over mid-wicket.

Singh Is Kinng goes to Toronto festival

The Akshay Kumar-starrer Singh Is Kinng – which its distributors claim has grossed $25 million worldwide in 12 days – will have a high profile release at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. On the other end of the spectrum is Firaaq, Nandita Das’ directorial debut that examines the psychological consequences of the 2002 Gujarat communal killings. "The story is set one month after the violent events of 2002 came to an end," says Nandita, who has been working to get the project off the ground for over four years. The story, which unfolds over 24 hours, ’explores the impact of violence on the human psyche, on relationships, and on one’s ability to remain hopeful in the face of a horrendous tragedy.’
The festival, which after Cannes and Berlin, has become a powerhouse for the sale of small and big films from across the globe will also show films directed by Deepa Mehta (Heaven on Earth) and Priyadarshan (Kanchivaram). Mira Nair and Shekhar Kapur’s short films, a part of the New York, I Love You omnibus are also being screened.

Hansika Meets with an Accident

Hansika who is in Hyderabad currently shooting for her film ’Maska’ met with an accident recently while she was on her way to the shoot. Luckily, Hansika escaped unharmed except for an injury to her hand. The accident happened near Banjara hills and she was immediately taken to a hospital to be seen to. After tending to her hand, she was released in an hour. When the unit people came to know of the accident, they insisted that Hansika take rest and cancel the day’s shoot. But Hansika did not feel the accident warranted wasting an entire day of the shoot and the producer’s money and turned up on the sets much to the surprise of everyone. But knowing how dedicated Hansika is when it comes to her profession, it’s not really surprising!!! "Maska" is produced by Suman Arts and she is cast opposite Raam.

Chiranjeevi to celebrate 53rd birthday in new avatar

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi will celebrate his 53rd birthday Friday in his new avatar of a politician. His fans will celebrate the occasion on a grand scale as it comes at a crucial turning point in the actor’s career. Hundreds of his fans are likely to descend on the state capital to wish him well on the occasion. Chiru, as he is popularly known, announced his entry into politics last Sunday and said he was dedicating his life to serve people. He will formally launch the party and announce its agenda at the public meeting to be held at temple town of Tirupati Aug 26. Though his fans were expecting that he would launch the party on his birthday, he preferred to do it on the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa. The actor told his maiden press conference Sunday that he was inspired by Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to serve the needy. Chiru, who has been acting in films for 30 years, was already engaged in social service and runs a blood and eye bank here. As he dons a new role, his fans are eagerly waiting to see him as the next Andhra Pradesh chief minister. Chiru has a huge fan-following, comparable with that of the spian N.T. Rama Rao, who had taken the state politics by storm by floating Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982. NTR had come to power within nine months after launching the party.

Deepika plays a love game!

Actors Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor are one of the crazy-in-love couples. So it came as no surprise to learn that the two on the sets of Bachna-Ae-Haseeno bonded over games of badminton in between shots. And guess who constantly one. It had to be Deepika Padukone, daughter of Badminton ace Prakash Padukone. And there's more. Deeps beat Ranbir 15-love. Phew! Now is this all about loving and giving in, or loving and giving up? -- IndiaTimes

Mahesh Babu in a lighthearted role?

After Athadu, hotshot Mahesh Babu teams up with director Trivikram after a big gap to churn out a romantic comedy Varudu which is loosely inspired by the Hindi film Hum Tum. If rumours are to be believed, then Mahesh will be playing a mature romantic role, a total contrast to his patent action hero roles. The lighthearted role will come as a good break for the actor as he has been almost typecast as a brooding actor. It will not be a regular love-at-first-sight kind of film but a mature love story between two educated and individualistic persons. The actor has chosen the right director who is proficient in blending love and comedy. Definitely this will be one interesting romantic film to watch out for.

Bipasha’s day out with Yuvraj

A combination of cricketer and film star is always unique and develops a center of attraction. Thinking this, Reebok Company has roped in sultry Bipasha Basu and ace cricketer Yuvraj Singh for endorsing their product. Earlier the company had zeroed upon John Abraham but since John is associated with Wrangler, they had to dump their decision. Now, they feel Yuvi is the right choice. Both Bips and Yuvi are perfect style statement and they had a wonderful time shooting outdoor.
Reebok spokesperson said, ’'The chemistry between the duo is evident. And the combination looks classy not just in this ad campaign, but the looks for the other sub-brands. We will have the classic, rugby looks among others that will be revealed.’’
Bipasha and Yuvi are close buddies and she is ecstatic to shoot with him. ’'It is fun and Yuvi is a bundle of energy. It feels great working with him,’’ she says, adding that the same goes for working with the entire Indian cricket squad. –

And that may be India's last and best chance of a second - and maybe even a third - Olympic medal after a series of disappointments over the past few days.Save for performance from Saina Nehwal in badminton, there has been little to cheer for India since that moment of euphoria Abhinav Bindra provided for the Indian contingent by clinching a gold medal in men's 10m Air Rifle event. The 23-year-old Vijender squares up against 19-year-old Ecuadorian Carlos Gongora in the middleweight (75kg) category and Jitender, barely 20, in the flyweight (51kg) category meets the more experienced and three-time European champion from Russia Georgy Balakshin, who at 28 has seen a lot of action in his eventful career. Both Vijender and Jitender hero-worship Akhil Kumar, who lost out in the quarterfinals of the bantamweight (54kg), to Moldovan Gojan Veaceslav. And if there is one lesson that both Vijender and Jitender would do well to learn, is to ensure they have a Plan B in place.Akhil and the Indian team management for all their positive outlook were clearly out-thought as Veaceslav, was not only stronger than expected, but also had a very tight defence, which the Indian just could not penetrate.

Pawan Kalyan, Mitra, Allu Arvind address NRI Meet in Hyderabad

Selfish politicians are enemies to rural uplift - Pawan KalyanPawan Kalyan said: “As far as my knowledge goes, most of the NRIs from Andhra Pradesh come from very ordinary families. But, they proved themselves by hard work and struggle. Moved by the philosophy of Annayya (Chiru), I appeal to you…. Please go for adoption of villages for the sake your native state and its development. All big enthusiasts should come forward. The backward regions should get the patronage. Though a number of good hearted NRIs are there to adopt the villages for development, this is not being allowed in many areas because of local politics. Such elements are not interested in the development of villages. But, we shall progress in this direction under the leadership of Annayya

Chiru gets taste of media

Hyderabad: The maiden press conference of Megastar Chiranjeevi ended in a virtual chaos and he nearly ran away from the venue promising to meet again as he was helpless in facing the deluge of questions from the scribes. Media persons were shouting at him when he left the dias nearly after an hour after the conference began. Struggling to pose questions, media persons thronged on to the dias and attempted in vain to attract Chiranjeevi’s attention. Some of them were seen shouting to ensure that he heard their questions. While a few lucky ones were able to get replies, others were in despair as they were not able to compete with their more vocal counter parts. The media conference hall, with a seating capacity of 80, at Chiranjeevi’s newly opened office, proved to be insufficient as nearly 200 reporters from print and electronic media along with cameramen descended on the venue.

Chiranjeevi: If not king, he’ll be kingmaker

Going by his reputation Chiranjeevi is an indecisive man who agonises a lot before taking any decision. But the delay in kickstarting his party has nothing to do with the megastar’s nature: it was possibly a deliberate decision to float a political outfit only six months before the elections. The film star wants to take a one full circle of the state which he reckons would boost his popularity enough to allow him to somersault to the chief minister’s gaddi. By implication the thinking is that if the period between his actual launch and elections is longer the superstar’s appeal could be waning. But on the eve of his maiden political press conference, analysts predict with confidence that Chiru will certainly be kingmaker, though they can’t figure out whether he has the chance of becoming the king. "It’s an inter-dependent world, what you will be able to achieve will also depend on what others do. Before Chandrababu Naidu’s ’Mee Kosam’ it was certain that TDP was on a very weak wicket; but no longer so. It would not be a cakewalk for Chiranjeevi," says a Congress MP.

Balakrishna with NTR in his next film

aabai Nandamuri Balakrishna with be acting with his son Ntr in the latter’s next film. According to our reporter Bannu, Balakrishna will be doing a major role in Ntr next film under VV Vinayak direction.
Vinayak and Ntr requested Balakrishna to act in their film and the Natasimham obliged their request. The main reason for this is the re-union between Nandamuri family members and Jr Ntr. This re-union was a part of political agenda of Chandra Babu Naidu in making the Nandamuri clan campaign for his Telugu Desam party.
All the best Ntr……hope ur babai brings the much needed punch

Bush tells Russia to get out of Georgia

President Bush warned Russia on Saturday against trying to pry loose two separatist regions in Georgia and said Moscow must end military operations in the West-leaning democracy that once was part of the Soviet empire.Bush told reporters at his Texas ranch that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s signing of a cease-fire plan with Georgia was “a hopeful step.” But Russia’s vision of Georgia without the provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was a nonstarter, the president said.

Russian forces still entrenched in Georgia

Russian forces built ramparts around tanks and posted sentries on a hill in central Georgia on Saturday, digging in despite Western pressure for Moscow to withdraw its forces under a cease-fire deal signed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The United States and France said it appeared Russia was defying the truce already. Russian troops still controlled two Georgian cities and the key east-west highway between them Saturday, cities well outside the breakaway provinces where earlier fighting was focused.

Badminton: Asia continues to dominate in 2oo8 beijing olympics

Badminton crowned its women’s singles champion, Zhang Ning of China as well as its men’s doubles champions, Kido Markis and Setiawan Hendra of Indonesia, as Asia continued its domination of this relatively young Olympic sport.

Hoyer-Larsen out on his own
Ever since it was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1992, only one gold medal has ended up outside Asia, with Denmark’s Paul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen winning the men’s singles in Atlanta in 1996. The remaining 19 gold medals prior to these Games were shared between just three countries: China, South Korea and Indonesia, whose five Olympic gold medals have all come in badminton.

Gigantic shuttlecock
The first of these was Susi Susanti’s victory in Barcelona in 1992, and just two hours later her fiancé, Allan Budi Kusuma, won the men's title. When Susanti and Kusuma returned to Indonesia the celebration in their honour included a two-hour parade through the streets of Jakarta that was led by a car carrying a gigantic shuttlecock. Susanti returned to win a bronze medal four years later in Atlanta, and in 1997 Susanti and Kusuma were married

No medals for the IOC

While the world follows the exploits of the China Olympics, journalists and athletes in Beijing have only limited access to what the world is saying about China. They can easily log on to any Web site covering the latest athletic feats, but may find their efforts thwarted if they try to read online commentary on the numerous human rights violations linked to Beijing's acting as host of these Olympic Games.
In spite of pledges of media and Internet freedom made to the International Olympic Committee while bidding for the 2008 Olympics, the Chinese authorities are continuing to block access to Web sites of some international human rights organizations, press freedom groups and overseas Chinese-language news Web sites. Reneging on promises to allow peaceful public criticism, Beijing is cynically using designated protest zones as bait to snare any would-be critics.
Before the Games began this summer, the president of the Olympic committee, Jacques Rogge, asserted that the IOC "carried out the only kind of diplomacy that works in China - silent diplomacy."

Bindra wants to run away from public glare

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Flattered he might be by the adulation that has come with his historic gold medal at the Beijing Olympics but marksman Abhinav Bindra says the attention is not comfortable and he has contemplated donning a disguise and running away for a month.Bindra was given a rousing reception on arrival from Beijing after becoming the first Indian to claim an individual gold medal, felicitated several times over by political bigwigs and has been busy giving sound-bytes to TV channels. The 25-year-old said he is exhausted and desperately wants to head home for some respite."I won the gold and my world exploded. I like to keep myself with my familiar comfort. While the attention has been flattering, at the same time there is constant glare of scrutiny which I can really do without," the rifle shooter wrote in his latest blog entry."I am so looking forward to being home in my familiar comfort one. I have flirted with the idea of donning a disguise and running away from a month till the euphoria passes and life gets to normal. Unfortunately that's not an option just as of now. But hey, it's fun fantasy," he quipped.Bindra said dealing with the new-found fame and attention was more daunting than shooting. PTI

Two American athletes confirm good air quality in Beijing

(BEIJING, August 13) -- US track and field athletes Bernard Lagat and Jeremy Wariner said on August 13 that Beijing's air quality is fairly good, allowing them to train and compete here as usual.
Thirty-three-year-old Lagat said that before arriving in Beijing he had read a number of articles on the city's poor air quality, reporting that often visibility was less than 20 meters. His worries were dispelled however upon landing in the capital city when he noticed the good air quality.
Defending 400-meter champion Jeremy Wariner expressed the same sentiment, that the pollution in Beijing is not as serious as foreign media had claimed.
The two athletes' impression of good air quality in Beijing goes to show the Chinese saying, "words are but wind, but seeing is believing".

It will be made at the whopping cost of Rs.2 billion ($40 million), publicists told IANS Tuesday. Big B thanks media, fans for his tour’s success

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s Unforgettable tour has worked out to be just that — unforgettable for him — and he has thanked the media and his fans, especially in San Francisco, for its grand success. "Thank you press and thank you San Francisco. You guys made our night and day and many many days and years impossible to forget!" the actor said in a latest post on his blog http://www.bigb.bigadda.com/ on Tuesday.
After his show, Big B felt the response from fans as well as the media had been unique. "It is rare for the media to spend half an hour praising the principals they are about to grind before a meet, but that is exactly what happened. They had not seen anything like this in the last 20 years. Wow!" he posted.Amitabh who was caught up with his tour had little time to describe his last two shows and wrote: "I am rushing to catch a flight now to New York, so I will not be able to spend much time in describing the last two shows, but as soon as I get an opportunity I shall." The actor concluded: "I am desperately trying to post some photos just to give you (readers) an idea of what we are experiencing. It is a madness I have not witnessed in years." He later added pictures of him, his son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya performing before a euphoric crowd in San Francisco. Bachchan has been performing on the tour with his son and daughter-in-law as well as several Bollywood actors including Madhuri Dixit, Preity Zinta and Riteish Deshmukh.

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo sued for sex selection ads in India

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo were issued notices by India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday, following a complaint that they were promoting techniques and products for the selection of an unborn child’s sex through advertising and links on their search engines. There is a deliberate attempt by these companies to target Indian users with advertisements that claim to help in the selection of a child’s sex, said Sabu Mathew George, the petitioner in the case, in a telephone interview on Thursday. The three companies were unavailable for comment, despite repeated phone calls to Yahoo in Bangalore, Google in Hyderabad and Microsoft in Delhi. The advertisement of products and techniques to aid in the selection of an unborn child’s sex is an offense under India’s Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act. In India, at least 900,000 unborn girls die each year through feticide, said George, who is a social activist associated with organizations fighting for the rights of young girls in India. As activists have succeeded in stopping sex-selection advertising in the print medium, Indian and foreign advertisers have moved to the Internet, George said. Unlike the print medium, Internet search engines allow for very targeted advertising, he added. "These companies are making money by breaking Indian laws," George said. The country’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Communications and IT have also been made respondents in this case, because they did not take any action against the three companies after the offenses were brought to their attention, George said. In India, search engines, video-sharing sites and social networking sites, including Google’s Orkut and YouTube, have been sued for objectionable content or copyright violations.

Latest smear against Obama an abomination

Statement on the Latest Version of Barack Obama's Plan for Higher Taxes

ARLINGTON, Virginia, Aug. 14 /Standard Newswire/ -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign issued the following statement from Doug Holtz-Eakin, McCain 2008 Senior Policy Adviser, on the latest version of Barack Obama's plan for higher taxes on the American people:
"Barack Obama has voted in support of higher taxes 94 times in just 3 years, including higher taxes for Americans making just $42,000 a year. Pawan Kalyan and Nandhini divorced

Pawan Kalyan and Nandhini are at last divorced after a very long high tension drama which prevailed for many months. Vizag court yesterday granted divorce to Nandhini and Pawan Kalyan after both accepted for it. Nandhini withdrew her cases of bigamy on Pawan Kalyan and his other family members. Both Pawan Kalyan and Nandhini settled the matter outside the court. Nandhini accepted for a divorce after Pawan accepted to pay an amount of 5 crores as compensation. Now Pawan Kalyan is free and happy to live his long time lover and live-in partner Renu Desai and their son Akira

Striking differences between Chiru and NTR

As the megastar’s fans are going gaga over his entry into politics, the big question that everyone is asking is whether Chiranjeevi will make an impact like Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. While the one thing common to both Chiranjeevi and NTR is their popularity, they are, however, as different as chalk and cheese in their mannerisms, outlook and the way they deal with people, among others. The most striking quality of NTR that made him a huge success was that he was immutable and always held his views firm even in the face of strongest opposition. He simply would be unmoved by criticism and had a devil-may-care attitude to everyone and everything. Here is a revealer. But Chiranjeevi is sensitive and finds difficult to swallow any hurtful comments. During the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Telugu film industry, a veiled attack on him by actor Mohan Babu made Chiranjeevi emotional. NTR had the ability to respond spontaneously to any development around him. Chiranjeevi may be one who ‘thinks and inks’ but his slow response to events gives an impression that he is not comfortable in jumping to conclusions and taking instant decisions. When confronted with some situations in his own family life, Chiranjeevi took a long time to react. In politics, like in comedy, timing is important. NTR was an adamant leader. Most of the important decisions were his own. He could neither be influenced nor would he consult anyone. Chiranjeevi hardly looks like he takes decisions on his own. By now the world has come to know that his brother-in-law Allu Aravind wields the greatest influence on him. NTR was also described as ‘Empty Drama Rao’ by his Congress critics for the theatrics that he indulged in. One day, he would come wearing an ear pendant. Another day, he would dress up as Swami Vivekananda. He never ceased to spring pleasant surprises. Quite obviously Chiranjeevi does not believe in throwing surprises. In fact, he drags suspenses to the point where people get a bit bored. The launch of his political party best illustrates that. There has been talk about it for such a long time that people around him, including his brothers, had to convince people that he, indeed would be jumping into politics.

Aamir Khan moved to tears at Chennai awards fest

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan was presented the 11th Gollapudi Srinivas National Award on Tuesday evening in Chennai for directorial excellence in Taare Zameen Par. The Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation gave the award, instituted in memory of the late director Gollapudi Srinivas, to Aamir. The award honours achievements by upcoming directors. And now comes the interesting part! Speaking at the event, veteran filmmaker K Balachander gave a heart-warming speech about Taare Zameen Par and it’s director. The speech, which spanned nearly 30 minutes, moved Aamir to tears and he looked choked for the remainder of the ceremony. “This movie made me cry, yet made me happy somehow. You made a movie on a buck-toothed baby (Darsheel Safary) and still emerged successful,” said Balachander. He also said that films such as Taare Zameen Par should make Indian cinema ’wake up from its complacency’.

Walt Disney plans ‘19 steps’ with Kamal

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan is set to star in an action thriller "19 Steps", to be produced in collaboration with Walt Disney. The film will be made at a budget of $50 mn. It will be directed by Bharat Bala who shot to fame with music maestro A.R. Rahman’s albums "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana". "19 Steps" will go on the floors in mid-2009 after Kamal completes his film "Marmayogi", which is another Hollywood co-production, said a publicist. The movie also stars Japanese star Tadanobu Asano, who is known for his Samurai roles in "Gohatto" (1999) and "Zatoichi" (2003). In "19 Steps", Asano plays a blood thirsty Samurai Kenji seeking to conquer the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu (precursor of Karate). He learns the tough 18 steps and masters the 19th from an Indian guru played by Kamal, said the publicist.

Rangeela born in Vijayawada: RGV

In my college I used to hang out with a guy called Ramesh who was a kind of a street goonda. Those days there used to be a lot of hobnobbing between students and goonda elements. Ramesh was a very feared guy in the locality and me and my friends used to be in awe of him. We used to spend endless hours with him in an Irani hotel. He developed a huge crush on one of the college girls which slowly turned into intense love. But he always used to look at her from far and never used to go near to her or talk to her in spite of our encouragement. I used to think it pretty ironical that such a tough guy becomes so tender when it comes to her. He always used to wear some dirty chappals and one day he came wearing a brand new pair of Nike shoes. They looked so funny on him and everyone laughed. He was hurt and I could see that it was his attempt to smarten himself to impress the girl. The girl started seeing this very good looking guy who was also rich and one of the very few guys who had his own car. All of us chamchas of Ramesh sat in Irani café and started goading him to go and beat up that guy and get him out of the way. Ramesh turned around and with a choked voice said that she deserved the best and the other guy was better suited for her than him in every which way. Rangeela took birth at that moment in that Irani café. The Nike shoes incident of Ramesh would appear as Munna wearing the yellow dress later in the film. I used to hear stories of a how Sridevi’s mother used to be a junior artiste and how she used to to go from studio to studio to make her daughter a star. I kind of combined bother her and her daughter into one and created the character of Mili.

Bipasha and Lara turn on the heat

Only recently, Deepika Padukone made a statement saying, “I don’t have a figure to wear a bikini.” We got fashion designer Aki Narula, who has not only dressed up the cast of Bachna Ae Haseeno but has also got Kareena Kapoor to don the fluorescent two-piece in Tashan , to spell out which actresses he thought could carry off a bikini. With much hesitation, he said, “It has to be Bipasha Basu and Lara Dutta. They both would look great in bikinis and will be able to carry it off well.” Both the long-legged damsels are working out very hard these days and are at their fittest and gorgeous best. Now only if they’ll add a bikini or two to their skimpy and sexy film trousseau. Of course, it all will be very aesthetic!

Former T&T Olympian gets 21 years in N.Y. rape case

NEW YORK -- A former Olympic sprinter from Trinidad and Tobago was sentenced to 21 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to raping a woman in a New York park.
Prosecutors say 31-year-old Alvin Henry was dubbed the Lover's Lane Rapist for secretly recording a woman having sex in the park with her boyfriend. They say he followed the woman and threatened to show the video unless she had sex with him.
Henry was charged with attacking women in parks in Brooklyn and Queens. He admits one of his victims was a woman in Prospect Park in June 2007. He pleaded guilty Wednesday.
Henry was a member of Trinidad and Tobago's 2000 Olympic 400-meter relay team.
A defense lawyer said Henry got caught up in a lot of things after someone introduced him to cocaine to give him an edge while training

2008 beijing olympics updates : China wins gold, US bronze in men's gymnastics

BEIJING -- The roar began as soon as Chen Yibing's feet hit the mat, a primal scream that was four pressure-packed years in the making.
Only half the meet was over, but so was this competition.
China has the Olympic title it has long craved and everyone else expected. The Americans, meanwhile, won the bronze with a roster patched together at the last minute when not one, but both Hamm brothers were knocked out with injuries.
Japan, the defending Olympic champion, won the silver.
"They told me, `We succeeded. We are the world champions.' I told them we reached our target," coach Huang Yubin said. "Other teams were good, but we were better. We performed perfect today. Everyone was excellent."
The Chinese began celebrating even before their last event, high bar, was finished. When little Zou Kai's feet hit the mat with a thud, his teammates jumped up and down. They stood behind a large Chinese flag, tears flowing.
There were no tears from the Americans, only elation. When the final standings popped up, Jonathan Horton screamed: "Nobody believed in us! Nobody believed in us."
China finished with 278.875 points, more than seven points ahead of Japan. That's such a blowout the Chinese could have brought three fans in for the last event and still won. The Americans had 275.850.
"It bothers me a lot, especially if people from home kind of put down our team, saying, `Count the U.S. out. We can't wait to see how China, Japan and Germany do,'" Horton said. "I wish more people in the U.S. believed in us like we believed in us. Now I hope more people realize the U.S. is a force to be reckoned with."
The Chinese have won seven of the last eight world titles, including the last three, and have more individual titles than a royal family. For all that, though, they were still considered underachievers. There was just one Olympic title during this reign, and their collapse four years ago was one of epic proportions

Phelps gets help for second gold in olympics n2008

BEIJING (AP) - Michael Phelps has his second gold of the Beijing games. It came in the 400-meter freestyle relay and he got the gold because of the performance of teammate Jason Lezak (LEE'-zak), who swam the anchor leg of the race. When Lezak dove into the pool for the last lap he was second to world-record holder Alain Bernard of France. He was still trailing with about 20 meters to go but from there the American turned on the afterburner. He made up the distance and finished 0.08 seconds ahead of Bernard.
Phelps swam the lead lap in the race and finished his portion of the race in second place. The Americans finished in first with a world record time of 3:08.24. The time shaved 3.99 seconds off of the world mark, which had been set the night before by the qualifying crew.
The gold in the 400-meter freestyle relay was preceded by a silver in the women's 400 freestyle by Katie Hoff. She had built a big lead in the race but finished 0.07 seconds behind Britain's Rebecca Adington.
After 2 of 5 individual races, Hoff has a silver and a bronze. The U.S. also picked up a silver today when Christine Magnuson finished second in the women's 100-meter butterfly

It hurts when coach questions our attitude, says Tendulkar

As if the World Cup disaster wasn't bad enough, the seniors in Team India have to cope with the humiliation and attitude and commitment barbs that coach Greg Chappell has allegedly been throwing at them. But they have had enough. As the storm of rage continues to blow across the country, some of the cricketers decided to break their dignified silence and spoke to TOI . " Paani sar se ooncha ho gaya hai ( Chappell has taken things a bit too far to keep quiet )." "Tell me, the world has gone on talking about all this (our defeat and exit) but has anybody spared a thought for us? Did they try to find out what we have been going through?" a shaken Sachin Tendulkar asked TOI . "I am shattered beyond words and I feel helpless. I've never felt so bad in my entire career." he added. "No matter how many Tests or one-day series you win, nothing else even comes close to a World Cup triumph. The World Cup was our passion, our collective goal, our dream and that has been shattered. And we all are terribly disappointed over it. "Again, it's not that we are defending ourselves. We do realise that we played badly and, as a team, we take full responsibility for that. But what hurt us most is if the coach has questioned our attitude. "I've given my heart and my soul for 17 years. No coach had mentioned even in passing that my attitude was not correct. Cricket has been my life for all these years and will always be," Tendulkar said. Some of the seniors are, in fact, so upset with the personal attacks that they are hoping to meet BCCI president Sharad Pawar on April 5 to present their side of the story. BCCI has already called for a high-powered review meeting on April 6 and 7 to chart out the future course of action for Indian cricket.

Why 'Singh Is Kinng' May Not Be A Hit!

After predicting 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic' flop much before its release numerologist Niraj Mancchanda now predicts that 'Singh Is Kinng' may not become a hit. Film distribution is Niraj's family business he explains in detail the numbers and business. "Originally Singh Is Kinng comes to number 32 which tallies to the number as critically acclaimed hits such as 'Chak De India' and 'Sarfarosh' and vibrates with Vipul perfectly. So there was no use to add an extra "n" and change it to number 37. By using 37 there is no chance that 'Singh Is Kinng' will be acclaimed more than 'Chak De India' and 'Sarfarosh' because in numerology 32 is the number of huge fame with success".Niraj further continues "Vipul has sold the movie to TV18 and made his moolah and so has TV18 as they have sold it to various distributors across the country and world wide at unheard prices. So now for the movie to be declared a genuine hit, it has to do bigger business than 'Krrish' which was numerologically titled by me and is the biggest hit and nett grosser till date and is expected to have done a business between Rs 85 - 90 crores Nett and not gross business worldwide. If TV18 has to recover more than 85-90 crores, Singh Is Kinng has to become a bigger nett grosser than Krrish to recover its cost. Further a distributor gets 20% commission on cost and if it does 100 -125 crores nett business, it will be called a commission earner and not a hit film. Only If it crosses 135 crores nett or around 300 - 325 crores gross business, it will be called a hit. For this kind of business the movie has to be housefull in theatres for atleast 2-3 weeks. So the chances of Singh Is Kinng being called a genuine hit are extremely low. Of course the producer can give advertisment and claim it to be a hit but can they show the collections on paper and prove it ".Niraj was responsible for the extra two y's in Heyy Babyy which changed Akshay Kumar's overseas market, took him to a different level and has further numerologically titled two more Sajid Nadiadwala films namely Kambakkth Ishq and Housefull and both stars Akshay Kumar

Chiru’s unfulfilled dream

Atlast, Chiranjeevi has announced his plans to enter politics this August, shelving his long cherished dream to become a director. After ruling the roost for a few decades as a reigning star, he was contemplating wielding the megaphone for his landmark 150th film, but all of a sudden he resolved to take up a different profession altogether. After his last release Sankardada Zindabad, he was preparing himself to stand behind the camera and even scouted for good scripts to realise his big ambition, but nothing came of it. However, his younger brother and actor PaWan Kalyan turned director with Johnny to join the exclusive club of star-turned-directors after thespians NTR and Krishna. It remains to be seen whether the numero uno actor will make a comeback after a successful political stint to accomplish his unfinished task or will he be content serving people forever?

ABHINAV BINDRA WINS OLYMPIC GOLD

Beijing, Aug 11, 2008[IBNLive]: Abhinav Bindra won India’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal when he claimed the men’s 10m Air Rifle shooting title here on Monday.
Athens Games champion Zhu Qinan of China won the silver and Henri Hakkinen of Finland took the bronze at the Beijing Shooting Hall on the outskirts of the Chinese capital.
Bindra, the 25-year-old businessman from Chandigarh, followed his world championship title two years ago to finally win a landmark gold medal for his country.
In one of the most thrilling shooting finals in Olympic history, Bindra overcame a two-point deficit against Hakkinen and one point against Zhu after the qualification rounds to annexe the title.
The Indian trumped his rivals with the best finish of 104.5 in the 10-shot final as he went into the last shot level with Hakkinen on 689.7 points.
While Bindra secured his best score of 10.8 in the deciding shot, Hakkinen managed only 9.7 to concede the silver to Zhu, whose last shot was 10.5.
Bindra finished with a combined tally of 700.5, a fair distance behind Zhu’s Olympic record of 702.7 set in Athens.
Zhu came in with 699.7 this time and Hakkinen, a member of Finland’s armed forces who is taking part in his first Olympics, scored 699.4 points.
India, winners of eight field hockey gold medals, had never won an individual Olympic title before Bindra’s feat.
The previous best was trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore’s silver at Athens, while there were bronze medals for wrestler Khasaba Jadhav (1952), tennis star Leander Paes (1996) and woman weightlifter Karnam Malleswari (2000

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi begins political career

Hyderabad, Aug 11 (IANS): Andhra Pradesh politics took a glamorous turn Monday with Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi beginning his much-awaited political journey by inaugurating the office of his party. He will formally launch the party later this month.
Chiranjeevi told reporters that he would launch the party "before the end of this month" and would make an announcement "in a couple of days". The actor, who had so far confined himself to social service, is launching his party when the state is gearing up for the elections scheduled early next year. The posh office built in the upmarket Jubilee Hills neighbourhood was inaugurated by the actor in the early hours Monday in the presence of his family members, close aides and two rebel leaders of the ruling Congress party and the main opposition Telugu Desam Party. Amid chanting of Vedic hymns by priests, the office was opened at 12.50 a.m., as per the ‘mahuratam’ set by astrologers. The family performed special prayers to seek divine blessings. Britain's Daley dives for youthful glory

Fourteen-year-old diver Tom Daley of Britain walks with his team mates during the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games at the National Stadium, August 8, 2008. Diving prodigy Daley needs an upset on Monday to steal the limelight from American swimmer Michael Phelps's quest for a record eight Olympic golds.

John McCain - Compares Barack Obama to Britney Spears ???

This ad obviously also addresses a unique facet in Barack Obama’s campaign that is unlike any other campaign we’ve seen in modern political history. A campaign that is focused on the development of an enormous image of celebrity status."
"These images of celebrity status and the way he has conducted his campaign … owe more to the development of an international celebrity status than it does to a traditional campaign for President."
The ad (video below) flashes a picture of Britney and Paris quickly, then shows Obama, afterwhich the announcer says:
"He’s the biggest celebrity in the world, but is he ready to lead?"
The ad highlights the fact that Obama has been slow to talk about his proposed policies and positions on major issues, and his celebrity tour around Europe, and the Middle East.
A commentator on Fox remarked, "Is Obama running for President of the United States, or President

Nicole Cooke wins first gold medal for Britain - Beijing Olympics 2008

The 25-year-old rode a perfect race, conserving energy in the peloton before breaking away with four other riders six kilometres from the end of the 126km course.
On the punishing final incline at Juyonggguan, Cooke looked as she was about to be dropped by the leaders with half a kilometre to go but, showing her immense power, fought back to the front before holding off a strong challenge from Sweden's Emma Johannsson to cross the line first by half a wheel length. Italy's Tatiana Guderzo was third.
"We did it," said Cooke. "It was perfect. It's a dream come true. I want to thank all the people who've been there from the start. I've worked so hard. I am so happy."
Her gold medal was the first by a British female cyclist and the first by any British cyclist, male or female, in a road race. It was also Britain's 200th ever gold medal in summer and winter Olympics.
Cooke, who celebrated wildly after her win, was shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award two years ago after she won the women's Tour de France and shot to the top of the world rankings, but this was her first triumph in a one-off major championship race

Madrid Made Just One Ronaldo Bid - Ferguson

The fiery Scot was incensed over the summer when the Spanish giants publicly tried to prise the Portuguese star away from Old Trafford before eventually being unable to land their man.Now Ferguson has said that United turned the one offer that they actually received and that the manner in which Madrid had operated had mean that the problems could long-lasting."We haven't had any recent contact with Real Madrid. Has there been any attempt to heal the rift? Yeah, that will be right," Sky Sports quoted him as saying."They put a bid in. I don't know if it was fax or letter or whatever. Just one. It was sometime in the summer."But the final decision was taken at the end of the season when the first nonsense appeared and Cristiano referred to his future being decided in the next few days."It was decided there and then he was staying. There was never any change in our stance."

Sonia concludes three days' trip to Beijing

Beijing (PTI): UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi left for New Delhi on Saturday evening after attending Olympic opening ceremony here.
Sonia met Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping during her visit and an MoU was also signed between the Congress and the ruling Communist Party of China aimed at promoting regular party-to-party exchanges.
After cheering Indian contingent at Olympic opening ceremony on Friday she had also attended a banquet hosted for visiting foreign dignitaries by Chinese President Hu Jintao.
During the opening ceremony Sonia stood and waved enthusiastically as soon as the 56-member Indian delegation led by shooter Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore entered the 'Bird's Nest' stadium at the Olympic Village in the Chinese Capital.

Don't fear religion, Bush tells China

BEIJING (AFP) — US President George W. Bush urged China's leaders not to be afraid of religious freedom as he attended a church service in Beijing on Sunday and held talks with Chinese leader Hu Jintao.
It is a point the US leader has repeated for several days during his trip to the Chinese capital for the opening of the Olympic Games, a visit he has promised would not be used to politicise China's moment on the world stage.
But a beaming Bush emerged from the Kuanjie Protestant church with his arms around fellow smiling worshippers and told the throng of waiting reporters and on-lookers that religion was nothing for China to be afraid of.
"Laura and I just had the great joy and privilege of worshipping here in Beijing," Bush said.
"You know, it just goes to show that God is universal and God is love, and no state, man or woman should fear the influence of loving religion."
Bush later alluded to a moment "full of spirituality" in the church when he appeared very briefly before the media with Hu before the two leaders retired for lunch and more private talks.
The US president has often credited faith for helping him overcome his struggle with alcohol, and US leaders have often raised the issue of religion when talking about what they have seen as flaws in the Chinese system.
China's officially atheist communist rulers strictly suppressed religion for three decades after coming to power in 1949.

Scintillating Saina strolls into pre-quarters

Saina Nehwal used the atmosphere she described as 'electrifying' to propel herself to a comfortable win in the first round of the Women's singles badminton competition on Saturday. The 18-year-old Saina thrashed Russian Ella Karachkova 21-9, 21-8 in just 28 minutes to move into the round of 32 where she meets Gryga Larysa.Larysa beat Agnes Allegrini 21-15, 21-11 in another match."I found the Olympic atmosphere electrifying and enjoyed it thoroughly. I had a comfortable time and did not have to exert myself or use too much of smashes. I relied on the drop shots and they worked well enough," said Nehwal, who could run into China's fourth seed Wang Chen in the round of 16.The Indian star has been training with former All England champion Pullela Gopichand. She dominated the match from the start and ran up huge leads early in both games and then built on them to wrap up the match.Saina, a good all-round player, kept her opponent pinned to the back court and then effectively dropped the shuttle dead right in front. The long rallies also helped her get used to the atmosphere, which could be pressure filled as and when she comes across a local Chinese player. She also attacked Karachkova's serve and gave her no room to find her feet in the match.

Tendulkar, Ishant, Laxman, Parthiv injured

Colombo, Aug 9 (PTI) Indian team suffered a major blow today with four of its main players including Sachin Tendulkar and Ishant Sharma, injured on the second day of the third and final cricket Test against Sri Lanka here but a clear picture of their participation in the game will be available tomorrow.Tendulkar hurt his elbow, Sharma fell down during fielding, VVS Laxman sprained his ankle during practice in the morning and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel sustained a cut near an eye."VVS Laxman has sprained his ankle and Tendulkar hyper-extended while fielding and jarred his elbow while Ishant landed on glaute (buttocks) and it is painful from the impact," Physio Nitin Patel told reporters."Hopefully, a clear picture will come up tomorrow," he added. On Parthiv, he said the wicketkeeper only had received a "minor cut" and he was expected to be okay."I think he is ok. He has just a minor cut," he said. PTI

Dhoni did a fantastic job: Tendulkar

New Delhi: One of the three pillars of Indian cricket who opted out of the Twenty20 World Championship—Sachin Tendulkar—spoke exclusively to CNN-IBN from Mumbai about the win.
"I thought it was just spectacular. We are all celebrating here. We have opened a few bottles of champagne and sprayed it all over the house. It's a wonderful moment I celebrated with my friends here," Tendulkar said after India beat Pakistan by five runs to be crowned the first ever Twenty20 World Champions.
The master blaster was quick to shower praise on India captian Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who will also be leading the Indian team when Australia come touring for seven One-Dayers.
"The entire team played terrific and Dhoni did a fantastic job. It's all about playing together, it really doesn't matter who the captain is or who the coach is, but if the team is together, you can play some good cricket," he said.
The highest run-getter in One-Day Internationals, Tendulkar said that it wouldn't have been possible without team effort. "What I saw here was a total team effort and good individual performances backed by other players. The whole team played brilliant cricket and I'm proud of all of them."
Tendulkar also added that star batsman Yuvraj Singh's performance in the tournament was just around the corner. "I have always felt that Yuvraj Singh was a special player and every now and then he goes out there and he proves that. I spoke to him after that innings (against Australia) and it was a special treat. How many times do you see six sixes being hit in an over? He is a fantastic player."
Tendulkar, however, said that though he wasn't part of the victorious team, he was always a part of them. "I am very much with the team, it doesn't really matter whether I'm sitting here in India but I'm always with them and it's a fantastic achievement. All credit to the entire team, without whom it wouldn't have been possible."
"You are world champions when all the eleven players in the team are performing. I'm extremely happy and proud as an Indian that the team has been able to achieve this. It will be talked for years to come," Tendulkar added.
"According to me, the turning point was when a catch was missed and it went for six and five runs came when it really mattered. Our guys were strong enough to pull it through,"

Beijing 2008 Olympics results

The City of Beijing is planning to invest more than $23 billion in preparation for the Olympic Games in 2008. Much of this money will be spent on construction projects in the following areas: Olympics facilities, transportation, telecommunications, and environmental improvements. Some of the projects are continuations of city improvements that have been planned for years. Others are entirely new projects that will now come to fruition since Beijing has been officially selected to hold the Olympics. Coupled with the Beijing municipal government promise that bidding on these projects will be open on an equal basis to both foreign and domestic companies, the 2008 Games could be a very enticing business opportunity.
The U.S. Commercial Service is available to work with American companies who seek to capitalize on these opportunities. As a start, this website serves as an introduction to the 2008 Olympics and relevant projects. Click here1 if you are an American-based firm interested in receiving our Olympics Hot Sheet1, an ad hoc e-newsletter containing Beijing Olympic project updates.
• The Beijing Olympic Action Plan is the guidelines and general plan for all preparations leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games. It was released by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) July 13, 2002. For an English translation of the general action plan, please click on the link below:

Rajini magic failing? Kuselan struggles at BO

Chennai, Aug 06, 2008[IBNLive]: After all the opening hype and controversy Rajinikant starrer Kuselan is struggling at the box office. The movie, which opened to full houses, has already seen a huge drop in collections. But it seems it may not be entirely Rajinikant’s fault. Theaters in Chennai, which are known for Rajini mania, no longer display a house full board. Kuselan has already seen a 50 per cent drop in collections. Such a drop is something unusual because usually a Rajini movie is a virtual guarantee for success in the first few weeks. Most moviegoers rue that Kuselan is not about Rajinikant. “Sivaji was completely about Rajini so we cannot compare that with Kuselan. Here he only has a guest role,” an ardent Rajini fan, Selvam, says. While the super star plays only a guest role, Kuselan was hyped like a full length Rajinikant film and that many believe led to too many expectations. Making it worse for the distributors was the fact that Kuselan was sold at prices that rivaled Rajinikant’s super hit Sivaji. The lukewarm response at the box office is already bringing back memories of Rajini’s 2002 flop Baba. Then the super star even paid back distributors for their losses but Kuselan may not be his fault entirely. The producer and the distributors are desperately hoping that the film would pick up in the next few days, at least in smaller towns and rural areas. But for the moment a shaky Kuselan looks nothing like a superstar’s superhit film

Chiru’s party on Aug. 24

Hyderabad Aug 07: Superstar Chiranjeevi will launch his political party at a public meeting in Tirupati on August 24. Sources close to the actor said all arrangements were complete and everyone was waiting for the final nod from Chiranjeevi. The associates of the actor had toyed with two dates, August 21 and 26, for the launch. But as both dates had muhurat problems, they zeroed in on August 24. Chiranjeevi will also be throwing a grand party for his colleagues in the Telugu film industry on August 10 in which he would announce his decision to enter politics and seek their cooperation. Sources said artists who do not have good vibes with Chiranjeevi such as Mohan Babu and Rajasekhar will also be invited to the party. This bash is likely to have the tone of a farewell party since Chiranjeevi may not sign films once he enters politics. Many directors and actors have come forward to join the party. Among them are noted director Puri Jagannath, star Srikanth and comedian Brahmanandam. Chiranjeevi has decided to contest from his native place Narsapuram in West Godavari district, where he expects huge support from members of the Kapu community. Incidentally, after delimitation, Narsapuram will be the smallest constituency in the state. After launching his party, Chiranjeevi will go on a three-month state-wide tour to spread his message. A special vehicle with all facilities has been readied for the tour and a detailed plan is being worked out

Opening Ceremonies: 2008 olympics

“That was spectacular. Tonight, the world was able to join in a magnificent tribute to the athletes and the Olympic spirit. It was an unforgettable and moving ceremony that celebrated the imagination, originality and energy of the Beijing Games.”
“We saw 204 national delegations march into the beautiful new National Stadium in the age-old tradition of the Games. Millions of people around the world were able to experience the thrill of seeing their heroes in a sea of team colours and national flags.”
“We witnessed athletes from these 204 countries and territories united in peace in one place. And for the next 16 days, they will be a part of one of the most thrilling competitions in history. As an Olympian, I can tell you that they will carry this memory with them forever. ”

“This iconic stadium is one of the world’s new wonders. It was a fitting setting for an amazing Opening Ceremony, I look forward to an equally exciting and unforgettable 16 days.”
Hein Verbruggen, IOC Member and Chairman of the Coordination Commission for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad
“Opening ceremonies have always been a way for host cities to welcome the world and for the world to gather and share the Olympic spirit. This ceremony to open the Beijing Olympic Games was a breathtaking culmination of seven years of planning and preparation. The world will remember this for a long time.”
“Tonight wasn’t the end of a journey, but the fantastic beginning of 16 days of outstanding sport competition. This was a night to remember — for the Chinese people, and for the world.”
“As I watched the rehearsals for this ceremony, I knew this night would be absolutely astonishing. However, the actual event exceeded all my expectations. This was an unprecedented and grand success.”

Beijing has Olympic Fever

Today, the excitement in China’s capital city is palpable and visible. Chinese flags, Olympic banners and the five Fuwa mascots of the Beijing Games can be seen everywhere. New trees, fresh flowers and plants add bright dots of colour to the freshly paved roads, evoking a feeling of the grand historical festivals that have been a part of China’s culture for thousands of years.
Old meets new
Around the city’s famous landmarks, from the Summer Palace to the Forbidden City, foreign and Chinese tourists alike are celebrating the meeting of centuries-old sites with the new enthusiasm that the Games have brought to the city. In Tiananmen Square, thousands of people have gathered to take pictures with the Olympic displays in the centre. Such displays, sculptures and other Olympic works of art can be found throughout the city, from tourist attractions to malls and parks.
