Chiru tells YSR to learn from Gujarat
"Let them visit Gujarat and see what the State Government there is doing. The Gujarat Government is playing the role of a facilitator not a broker in the promotion of SEZs," he said.
The strongly-worded statement, perhaps the first from him, came when reporters asked him to respond to Geetha Reddy’s remarks that he had better visit West Bengal before commenting upon the SEZs here in the State.
In Gujarat, industrialists purchased land directly from farmers for setting up SEZs while the State Government merely developed the infrastructure, Chiranjeevi explained.
"It’s a peculiar situation in Andhra Pradesh where the government is acting as a broker and acquiring land for rich industrialists at the cost of poor farmers," he alleged.
Pointing out that the SEZ Act clearly specified that farmers, whose lands were acquired for setting up trade zones, should be made stake-holders in the respective projects, the starturned- politician said, "the onus is on the government to ensure that affected farmers get their due. It can’t acquire land at throwaway prices from farmers and sell it at exorbitant rates to industrialists. It should share the profit thus accrued with the farmers." On the continuing suicides of powerloom workers in Sircilla, the megastar sought to know if the State Government had any answer. He called upon the workers not to lose heart and promised to bring light into their lives, if voted to power.
mran Khan 12-storey jump angers Sanjay Dutt
Leaving the crew of the film astonished, Imran underwent a three-week training by the UK-based action director Dane and did all the parkour himself.
The chase scene between Imran’s and Sanjay Dutt’s characters involves a heavy dose of stunning parkour (free-running) and is among the high points of the film. The scene required Imran to jump from a 16-storey building, which he did without any support!
Imran’s trainer, Dane, was supposed to perform the stunt, but suffered a severe fall from the 12th floor in one of the takes leading to a subsequent black-out.
Dane was rushed to the hospital but Imran stayed back at the location and wrapped the stunt himself. While director Sanjay Gadhvi could not dissuade the young actor from this act of sheer dare-devilry, Sanjay Dutt who was on location, and is incredibly protective about Imran, rebuked him for doing his own stunts at this age when he had a long career ahead of him.

Chiranjeevi’s AP tour begins next week
Hyderabad, Sept 28: Megastar Chiranjeevi will embark on a state-wide tour next week to take his newly-floated Praja Rajyam party closer to the people.
He will start the much-awaited tour from Srikakulam district, the northeastern tip of Andhra Pradesh. After covering the coastal districts, the star will visit Telangana region in the second phase. The third phase will take him to Rayalseema region.
‘I will cover 50 km every day interacting with the people and explaining to them the policies of Praja Rajyam,’ he told a news conference here Sunday.
Chiranjeevi, who floated his party Aug 26, the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, will be launching a week-long flag festival, "Oroora Praja Rajyam" (Praja Rajyam in every town) — a massive mass contact programme – from Oct 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. During the festival, the party flags will be hoisted in every village, town and city.
The party will also launch its membership drive on the same day. ‘I will give first membership to physically challenged Balakrishna Naidu and I will take the second membership,’ Chiranjeevi said. He had already announced the physically challenged youth would be the first member of the party.
The Praja Rajyam founder said the party would also plant 10 million trees all over the state during the flag festival. He asked all his fans and supporters to take part wholeheartedly in the plantation drive to increase the green cover and save the environment.

Shankar throws Meera out of his movie
While it is not clear what went wrong between Shankar and Meera, some suggest that Meera failed to report for shooting on the dates she had given for the film. The crew looked for other options after waiting for a few days, which included replacing Meera with a suitable actress. But sources close to Meera say that the actress withdrew from the film due to some creative differences between her and the film’s young hero Nanda. Although Meera still has some projects in Tamil like Aadi Narayana and Mariyadhai, it needs to be seen what all these black marks can do to her career in the South.

Shah Rukh Khan Fan frenzy picturised

“It is a grand dance number that is aimed at establishing how big SRK is not only in India but also abroad. It will show his Michael Jackson kind of appeal among his fans. There’s a montage of videos that show how his fans go berserk on seeing him. It will also include the star’s personal experiences with his fans as the backdrop,” reveals choreographer Pony Verma..
SRK plays himself in the movie and has an extended guest appearance in it. He is set to act for around 45 minutes and do a couple of ‘item’ numbers.
“We are currently busy shooting for this dance number. It will be a spectacle. Priyadarshan is not leaving any stone unturned to create a big hype around the movie,” she says. Pony adds, “We wish to begin the film with this sequence. It will establish Shah Rukh as the most sought after and followed actor in India.”

Australia should assess security risk before Indian tour

Bangladesh rebel players face 10-year ban
"The decision will be equally effective for contracted players or coaches if they participate in any cricket event having no approval of the ICC (International Cricket Council) or the BCB," Major-General Sina Ibn Jamali told reporters.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board president was speaking after a board meeting convened to make a decision when seven contracted players applied to the board for early retirement.
Former captain Habibul Bashar, batsmen Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, and Nazim Uddin, all-rounder Farhad Reza, wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh and left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain requested early retirement this week without giving a reason.
Bashar and 12 other leading Bangladesh players will form a new team called the Dhaka Warriors in the unofficial Indian Cricket League (ICL) this year, organisers said in New Delhi on Tuesday.
"I never thought that the BCB would impose such a harsh punishment which fits only for match fixers or drug abusers," Bashar told Reuters.
"We signed contracts with ICL to play cricket, not to indulge in any crime."
The Twenty20 league is not recognised by the national governing bodies in the International Cricket Council but Basher said their contracts bound the league to release them to represent their country.
Bashar, his former deputy Nafees, wicketkeeper Ghosh and all-rounder Alok Kapali were presented at an ICL news conference in the Indian capital on Tuesday where Bashar told reporters all-rounders Reza and Ahmed had also signed.

RP working on slower delivery for series against Australia
What's this?

Rudra Pratap Singh reckons varying pace would be the key against Australia [Images] and the Uttar Pradesh [Images] left-arm pacer says he has developed a slower ball that would prove quite a handful for Ricky Ponting [Images] and his men when they arrive for a Test series in India next month.
RP says the Aussies would prove tough customer even when they are playing away and the surprise element should be there if a bowler has to succeed against them.
"As a preparation for the Australia series I am just concentrating on my basics," said RP, insisting he would otherwise like to keep things simple.
"But I am trying some new variations as well and have developed a new slower delivery," RP said on the sidelines of an interactive session with the students of Amity University in Noida on Wednesday.
"Besides, I'm also working on bouncers," he added.
The Indians will have to be at their best to thwart the Australians and they are likely to roll out dust-bowls against the visitors to suit their traditional spin strength.
RP, however, felt they can afford to play on lively pitches which would have something for the spinner as well.
"I would prefer lively pitches, which should be fair to all and make it an even contest between bat and ball," said RP, known as an intelligent bowler with a natural ability to swing the ball both ways.
India will have a decent pool of pacers to chose from for the four-match Test series against Australia and RP says the competition for the berths augurs well for the team.
"This healthy competition is good for Indian cricket. Personally too, you get to learn so many things. Even a senior bowler learns things from the youngsters, especially their mental approach," he said.
RP also stressed on the need for a strict fitness regime to restrict injuries to a minimum and keep going.
"Injury is a part of our life, we can't escape it. But if we follow a strict fitness regime and work on the trainer's instructions, we can at least reduce it," he said.
RP shares a good chemistry with his one day and Twenty20 [Images] captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images] and the left-arm seamer is forthright about whom he wants to see as India's next Test captain.
"Anil Kumble [Images] is good captain, he has everything what it needs. But if somebody becomes the next Test captain, it will be Dhoni," RP said.

India gets NSG waiver
It is a 45-nation cartel that controls trade in "dual-use" nuclear fuel, materials and technology to ensure they are applied only to civilian nuclear energy programmes, not diverted into clandestine nuclear weapons work.
The NSG was formed in reaction to India’s shock 1974 nuclear test explosion, using reactor technology provided by Canada in the 1950s supposedly for peaceful energy development.
Group policy has been to do business only with countries belonging to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty — the only outsiders are India, Pakistan and Israel — and permitting "full-scope" inspections by the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
The NSG website says: "(We seek) to contribute to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear related exports. NSG guidelines are implemented by each participating government in accordance with its national laws and practices. Decisions on export applications are taken at the national level in accordance with national export licensing requirements."
In 2002, NSG export controls were updated to help prevent the threat of nuclear terrorism as well.
NSG members are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.
The cartel normally has one annual plenary meeting and decisions are made by consensus only. Members can also hold consultative sessions. The NSG has no permanent office and details of its deliberations are kept confidential.
The 2008-09 NSG chairman is Germany.

US Open Day 11: Not The Roger Federer Of Old But The Outcome Is Familiar
Seeking his fifth straight US Open title - a feat that hasn’t been done since Bill Tilden did it in 1924 - Federer overcame a surprisingly strong performance by qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (5) 6-4 7-6 (5).
“It was really difficult,” Federer said. “Gilles played a really fantastic tournament. … It was hard just to get solid contact on his serve.”
Federer has not won a Grand Slam tournament title since last year’s Open - his 12th major title, two behind the men’s record held by Pete Sampras.
“I was very happy the way I pulled it out at the end because it looked like it was going (to a) fourth (set),” Federer said. “You try to stay positive, but you look at the score and sometimes it’s not good.”
Muller may have come out of the qualifying and been a surprise quarterfinalist, but he gave Federer all the tournament’s number two seed could handle. The left-hander’s big game - he finished with 16 aces - matched Federer for much of the afternoon.
“It was tough today, especially to break against the wind,” Federer said. “It was almost impossible. He’s a big guy. He gets great angles and he’s got a lot of safety in his serve, especially the first serve. He does have great variety.”
It was the first time the best player from Luxembourg has made it past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament, and only once did he make it that far, at Wimbledon in 2005 when he upset Rafael Nadal in the second round. Prior to this year, Muller had won only one match on the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Center, and that was an first-round upset of Andy Roddick three years ago.
The two held serve through the first set, with Federer stymied when he had two set points on Muller’s serve in the 12th game. Federer then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak before Muller pulled even at 4-4.
Four points later, Federer rifled a backhand down the line that Muller got his racquet on, but was unable to control his shot and his volley went wide.

Serena wins latest battle in war of Williams sisters
Venus and Serena have met twice in the US Open final, with the older Venus winning in 2001 before losing to Serena the following year.
This was a brilliant match featuring long rallies and precision shot-making but also a number of uncharacteristic errors from Venus, who went 0-for-10 on set points. "It felt like the final of the US Open. I can't believe I won. Wow," Serena said. "It was difficult because she is such a great player."
Serena booked a semi-final berth against Russian Dinara Safina, who outclassed Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-3 in the other quarter-final on Wednesday.
Safina is trying to follow in the footsteps of her big brother, Marat Safin, and win her first grand slam title at a US Open.
The other semi-final will be between Russian Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in a super Friday of women's matches at Flushing Meadows.
Serena, who lost to her sister earlier this year in the Wimbledon final, has now won nine of their 17 matches.
"I tried not to look at her. If I did, I might start feeling sorry for her," Serena said.
"I caught myself looking at her once and I had to say to myself, 'Serena, keep your head down'."
"She played well and kept a lot of balls in play," Venus said. "I was just praying on some shots tonight. I would get up and feel confident but for whatever reason didn't get the point. Nothing I planned.
"That's tennis. It is never over until it is over."
Russian sixth seed Safina, who reached her first grand slam tournament final earlier this year at the French Open, said winning the US Open would put a fitting exclamation point on her season.
The 185-centimetre Safina, 22, needed only 71 minutes to reach her first US Open semi-final. "It's great," Safina said. "I'm getting closer to reaching the same thing as my brother. I just hope that one day I can have the same title."
Big brother Marat won the US Open men's title in 2000.
Men's sixth seed Andy Murray advanced to the men's semi-finals after a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-5 victory over 17th-seeded Argentinian sensation Juan Martin del Potro.
Murray ensured his rise to a career-high fourth in next week's ATP rankings, matching the highest spot any British man has ever held, by halting the South American's 23-match winning streak to reach his first grand slam tournament semi-final.
"I'm very relieved," Murray said. "I had my chances to put it away earlier and let it slip away. It was unbelievable."
The lanky 21-year-old Scotsman booked a Saturday date against top-ranked Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion, who is 5-0 against Murray.
Nadal beat American Mardy Fish 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in their quarter-final
Rafael Nadal through to the semis at US Open, Federer still to play
Nadal played against American Mardy Fish who started well and managed to win the first set 6-3. While the home crowd was rooting for a sensational American victory over Nadal, the latter proved why he is considered the best tennis player in the world, quickly winning the next three sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Fish’s mistakes certainly helped the Spaniard to reach the semifinals where he will play against Britain's top player Andy Murray. Murray advanced to the semifinals after winning against Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro (7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5). Murray, like Nadal, will play his first ever semi-final at the US Open.
The advantage, however, is on Nadal's side because of the five times the two have faced each other, Nadal has always emerged as the winner.
So far Nadal has notched up a total of 75 wins in his career and only eight losses. If he wins the US Open Nadal will become the first tennis player to have won three consecutive Grand Slam titles. Earlier in the year Nadal won the French Open and Wimbledon after beating current number two and former number one Roger Federer on both occasions.
Federer is yet to play his quarterfinal game at the US Open against Gilles Muller, Luxembourg’s qualifier, who managed to dismiss Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in the fourth round of the tournament.
Federer, Djokovic Advance to Semifinal Meeting at U.S. Open

Federer defeated qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the National Tennis Center in New York to continue his quest for a fifth straight U.S. Open title. Djokovic was a 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) winner over Andy Roddick, who was the last American left at the year's final Grand Slam tournament.
Switzerland's Federer and Serbia's Djokovic will meet in one men's semifinal in two days, while Spain's Rafael Nadal plays Britain's Andy Murray for the other spot in the final.
``He's absolutely the favorite,'' Djokovic said of Federer in a televised courtside interview. ``I lost to him last year. For him it's a big challenge to go back to the No. 1 spot in the world.''
Those Sept. 6 semifinals could be disrupted by rain from Tropical Storm Hanna, said the U.S. Tennis Association, which has contingency plans for alternate schedules in case of bad weather conditions.
The women's semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow, when Russia's Elena Dementieva faces Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams of the U.S. plays Dinara Safina of Russia. The women's final is scheduled for Sept. 6.
Federer Advances
Federer needed 56 minutes and seven set points before winning the first set against the 130th-ranked Muller in a tiebreaker. He took the second set after winning a game on Muller's serve at 4-4, the lone service break of the match.
Muller had rallied from 0-2 deficits twice in his first four matches, the first player to do so at the U.S. Open since Aaron Krickstein in 1986. He couldn't find the same success against the second-seeded Federer, who overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third-set tiebreak to advance to the semifinals of a Grand Slam for a record 18th straight time.
``He's been serving great, so I didn't get that many opportunities,'' Federer, 27, said. ``Straight sets is the best result. I'm very happy the way I came and pulled it out in the end because it looked like it was going for four.''
Federer hasn't lost at the U.S. Open since 2003, the third- longest streak in tournament history. Helen Wills won 46 matches in a row from 1927-33 and Bill Tilden took 42 straight from 1920-26. Tilden in 1924 was the last man to claim a fifth straight U.S. Open title. He went on to a sixth victory the following year.
Federer's 36 career hard-court titles are tied with Pete Sampras for the second-most in history, yet this is the first season since 2001 that he's come to New York without having won a hard-court tournament. This is the farthest he's advanced in four hard-court singles events season, having most recently lost in the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics.
Djokovic Booed
Federer is 6-2 all-time against Djokovic, including a straight sets win in last year's final.
Djokovic, 21, won the first two sets against Roddick by converting all four of his break-point opportunities. Roddick had his serve broken three times in his first four wins.
After serving just two aces in dropping the first two sets, Roddick fired eight in taking the third set from the third- seeded Djokovic, this year's Australian Open winner.
Serving for the set at 5-4 in the fourth, Roddick had consecutive double-faults and was broken when Djokovic dropped a backhand lob over his head. Djokovic went on to win the tiebreak and celebrated the victory by pounding on his chest when Roddick's final shot sailed long.
Djokovic, who has said he's been bothered by several injuries during the tournament, drew catcalls from the stands when he complained after the match that Roddick had questioned the extent of his physical problems.
``Andy was saying I had 16 injuries in the last match,'' Djokovic said as the crowd booed. ``They're obviously against me because they think I'm faking everything. That's not nice to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries.''

Katrina on top with six hits in a row: critics

"Katrina has immensely evolved as an actress. In Bollywood, actors are mostly known for the number of hits that they can deliver. Katrina has won in that respect hands down. She can undoubtedly be called a lucky mascot for her producers," popular film critic Taran Adarsh told IANS over phone from Mumbai. After wowing audiences in the recently released romantic comedy "Singh Is Kinng" opposite Akshay Kumar, Katrina has successfully displaced top-rung actors, including Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra. Her success story started with "Namastey London" and continued with "Apne", "Partner", "Welcome", "Race" and now "Singh Is Kinng". "Last year was simply fantastic and, touchwood, this year is the same. I would like to thank god. I believe in enjoying doing the work I’m doing. It is also good to know that the hard work I have put in has shown result. I will continue to do so," Katrina said. The 24-year-old star ventured into Bollywood in 2003 and was instantly written off because of her strong British accent. But after five years of hard work and determination, she is one of the most sought after actresses in the Hindi film industry. Her next is Subhash Ghai’s "Yuvraaj", which is about the arrogance and overconfidence of contemporary youth. Set to release in October, critics are confident that Katrina has another hit on the anvil in "Yuvraaj". Mumbai-based film critic Anupama Chopra says there are high expectations from Katrina’s performance in the movie. "Katrina has had a fortunate choice of films" even though she "had a rather unfortunate start with ’Boom’," Chopra said. "She is a stunning looking actress and so far she is doing well with her glam doll image. We did see glimpses of an actor in her performance-oriented roles such as in ’Namastey London’," Chopra explained. Katrina is one of eight siblings, all girls. Her mother is British and her father is from Jammu and Kashmir who has since acquired British citizenship. The actress spent her formative years in Hawaii but later moved to London. She started modelling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the age of 14. Thereafter she continued modelling in London till she moved to Mumbai in quest of a career in the world’s largest film industry. She has also moved on to bigger banners and has teamed up with John Abraham and Neil Mukesh for a Yash Raj Films’ project. Apart from that, she will be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi’s next film, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", with Ranbir Kapoor. Besides spinning gold at the box office, Katrina also has an assorted line-up of brand endorsements. These include Nakshatra diamond jewellery and Veet hair removal cream among others. The actress created waves when she replaced Aishwarya Rai as the brand ambassador of Nakshatra last month, besides bagging the crown of being the most downloaded Indian actress in cyber space. "Katrina is the perfect representation of the young, trendy and fashionable woman that Nakshatra targets. We feel that Katrina lends a refreshing look to the brand. We are excited about having her on board as the new face for Nakshatra," said Mehul Choksi, chairman, Gitanjali Group and Nakshatra. Though the actress has acquired a star status in a short span, critics feel that she needs to work on more performance-based roles. Said Chopra: "Katrina needs to evolve and emerge out of her glamorous image to do meatier roles like the ones Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta were doing two to three years ago."
Rani Mukerji hates being called a Yash Raj heroine
"What exactly do people mean by this? Agreed Rani has done comparatively more films with the Yash Raj banner. But that’s because any heroine in Bollywood would be foolish to turn down an author-backed heroine-centric part like ’Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’. And so what if the film didn’t work? She’s very proud of the film and rates it among her best films," a source close to the actress told IANS. Rani has recently featured in three Yash Raj Films’ productions - "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic", "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" and "Ta Ra Rum Pum". Earlier, she has done films like "Bunty Aur Babli", "Veer-Zaara" and "Hum Tum" for the banner. The source added: "In fact, Rani makes it a point to remind people that lately she did Karan Johar’s ’Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, Ravi Chopra’s ’Baabul’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ’Saawariya’. None of these is a Yash Raj film." And if rumours are to be believed, Rani is on the verge of signing a couple of films outside the Yash Raj banner. "One, of course, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical ’Bajirao Mastani’, which is far from shelved. Sanjay plans to make the film in the near future. And while the rest of the cast may change, Rani as Bajirao’s wife remains in place. There are other films that Rani is seriously considering," the source said. "Some time ago Rani said no to Mira Nair’s ’Namesake’ for emotional reasons. The excuse was dates. But Rani had her own reasons for foregoing a role that has changed Tabu’s career internationally. "Today, Rani is in a space where she realises being hard-headed and business-like is what Bollywood is all about. She certainly doesn’t want to be branded a Yash Raj heroine." Rumours are rife that Rani acts like a hostess at Yash Raj Studios, but the allegation is strongly denied by people close to the organisation. "This is all in people’s minds. Rani is at home in every production house. Have you seen her with Karan Johar or Sanjay Bhansali? She’s totally relaxed in their homes, has long chats with their moms and even goes into their kitchen at will," said the source. At the moment, Rani is busy preparing for her cricket film, which is being directed by Anurag Singh for the Yash Raj banner. "It’s being said she’s agreed to work with a new director because of the banner. But hello … Rani has worked with Kunal Kohli and Shaad Ali. Even Karan Johar was a debutant when Rani did ’Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’."

Roddick has easy ride into quarters
Roddick's victory in under 90 minutes should leave him relatively fresh for a last-eight showdown with Novak Djokovic, who endured a gruelling five-setter against Tommy Robredo, overcoming hip, stomach, ankle and breathing problems in the three hour 45 minute match.
"I feel good," Roddick said in a courtside interview. "I've got to feel good, he's got about 16 injuries right now."
Roddick will also have a spring in his step when he comes out on Thursday as he has spent just 3-1/2 hours in total dispatching his last two opponents. In comparison, the Australian Open champion has been on court for almost eight hours over the same period.
But Roddick said the 21-year-old Djokovic had youth on his side, as well as a better record in recent months, and that he himself had been fighting various injuries.
"He's had a much better year to this point so it's a matter of if you want to look back 10 days or 10 months," the 2003 U.S. Open champion told reporters. "He's the favourite, and it seems like every grand slam he's having these long drawn out battles."
Still, he made light of Djokovic's litany of woes -- asked about the Serbian's latest injuries, the eighth seed said: "A back and a hip? And a cramp? Bird flu... anthrax... SARS... common cough and cold."
"If it's there, it's there," he added. "There's just a lot. He's either quick to call a trainer or he's the most courageous guy of all time."

Federer advances to U.S. Open fourth round
Yesterday Federer's complete package of tennis - 12 aces, first-serve winning percentage of 75 and six converted break points (of 11) - provided the latest verse in Federer's familiar tune of dominance. The evidence that Federer is having an off year, with one semifinal finish and two runner-up trophies in the previous three majors, did not square with the ease of his control so far. To have such an easy time in three straight-sets victories here "is good for me," he agreed, "to not waste any energy. I'm playing well and moving on in the draw."But he is not attempting to "send a message." "Not really," he said. "At the end of the day, what counts is winning the tournament. And, anyway, you forget who you beat, how you won. You forget all the unforced errors you made, and all anybody's going to talk about is the finals. That's how I look at things. I don't try to impress anybody in the early rounds. If it happens, that's great. I don't really care that much."TODAY'S FEATURED MATCHES
Nadal, Williams Sisters, Murray Reach U.S. Open Quarterfinals
The top-ranked Nadal beat big-serving American Sam Querrey 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 at the National Tennis Center in New York. It was the first time the Spaniard dropped a set in the tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year. The players got a standing ovation after the 3 hour, 13 minute match.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams was never in trouble against Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, beating her 6-1, 6-3. Serena, who has also won the title twice, breezed past Severine Bremond of France 6-2, 6-2 in an hour to set up the last eight match against her older sister, who beat her in July's Wimbledon final. They are the only quarterfinalists to have won a Grand Slam.
``It will be a good match,'' the 26-year-old Serena said in a televised interview. ``She's playing incredible. I'm going to have to improve my game.''
Querrey fired 20 aces in his match against Nadal, who served five. The American produced 52 winners to Nadal's 37, while the Spaniard, who said he struggled with the wind at Arthur Ashe Stadium, made 41 unforced errors, eight fewer than his opponent.
`Very Tough'
``It was very tough,'' Nadal said in a televised interview after the match. ``Sam is a big server.''
Watched by 23,000 spectators in the world's biggest tennis arena, Querrey used his 6-foot-6 frame to fire six aces past the Olympic champion and hit 17 winners to Nadal's five in the second set.
In the third set, the 20-year-old Querrey forced a tie- break after fighting back from 3-1 down. Nadal jumped out to a 6-2 lead and converted the first set point.
In the fourth set, Nadal broke the American to lead 4-2. In the next game, the longest of the match, Querrey failed to convert seven break points. Nadal converted his first match point with an overhead smash.
``I was a little nervous, but after an hour or so I found my shots,'' Querrey said in a televised interview. ``I came up a little short. The guy is just too good.''
Federer Ousted
Nadal, 22, took over the No. 1 ranking on Aug. 18, ending the record 237-week run of four-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer. The Spaniard last month became the first man since Bjorn Borg to win the French Open and Wimbledon in one season, both times beating Federer in the final. He has never got past the quarterfinals at New York.
Nadal will next play unseeded American Mardy Fish, who reached the quarterfinals for the first time with a 7-5, 6-2, 6- 2 win over No. 32 seed Gael Monfils.

YSR rejects Chiranjeevi’s allegation on land sale
The chief minister said that "criticism for the sake of criticism" was not proper on the part of the new party launched by the actor and he went on to defend the sale of government lands. Participating in a debate on a Telugu television channel, Reddy said the government was developing assets by making use of unproductive government lands that were vulnerable to encroachment. Chiranjeevi, while launching his ‘Praja Rajyam’ in Tirupati Aug 26, came down heavily on the government for selling state-owned land to private companies and for acquiring cultivable land for Special Economic Zones. "The sale of government land amounts to selling away the future of our children. The government should be custodian of these lands and not act as a broker," the actor had said. The chief minister said that land lying idle faced the threat of encroachment and being sold through auction to mobilise funds for various programmes related to public welfare.
