Chiru tells YSR to learn from Gujarat

Hyderabad, Sept. 29: Praja Rajyam supremo Chiranjeevi on Sunday joined issue with Major Industries Minister J Geetha Reddy over development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and advised the Rajasekhara Reddy Government to take a cue from Gujarat.

"Let them visit Gujarat and see what the State Government there is doing. The Gujarat Government is playing the role of a facilitator not a broker in the promotion of SEZs," he said.

The strongly-worded statement, perhaps the first from him, came when reporters asked him to respond to Geetha Reddy’s remarks that he had better visit West Bengal before commenting upon the SEZs here in the State.

In Gujarat, industrialists purchased land directly from farmers for setting up SEZs while the State Government merely developed the infrastructure, Chiranjeevi explained.

"It’s a peculiar situation in Andhra Pradesh where the government is acting as a broker and acquiring land for rich industrialists at the cost of poor farmers," he alleged.

Pointing out that the SEZ Act clearly specified that farmers, whose lands were acquired for setting up trade zones, should be made stake-holders in the respective projects, the starturned- politician said, "the onus is on the government to ensure that affected farmers get their due. It can’t acquire land at throwaway prices from farmers and sell it at exorbitant rates to industrialists. It should share the profit thus accrued with the farmers." On the continuing suicides of powerloom workers in Sircilla, the megastar sought to know if the State Government had any answer. He called upon the workers not to lose heart and promised to bring light into their lives, if voted to power.

mran Khan 12-storey jump angers Sanjay Dutt

This Eid’s most keenly-awaited film Kidnap sees the latest teen sensation Imran Khan in a radically different avatar. From essaying a boy-next-door in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na to a new-age angry young man, Imran has grown by leaps and bounds. Kidnap sees him perform some death-defying stunts, which even had veteran Sanjay Dutt concerned for his safety and well-being.

Leaving the crew of the film astonished, Imran underwent a three-week training by the UK-based action director Dane and did all the parkour himself.

The chase scene between Imran’s and Sanjay Dutt’s characters involves a heavy dose of stunning parkour (free-running) and is among the high points of the film. The scene required Imran to jump from a 16-storey building, which he did without any support!

Imran’s trainer, Dane, was supposed to perform the stunt, but suffered a severe fall from the 12th floor in one of the takes leading to a subsequent black-out.

Dane was rushed to the hospital but Imran stayed back at the location and wrapped the stunt himself. While director Sanjay Gadhvi could not dissuade the young actor from this act of sheer dare-devilry, Sanjay Dutt who was on location, and is incredibly protective about Imran, rebuked him for doing his own stunts at this age when he had a long career ahead of him.

Chiranjeevi’s AP tour begins next week

Hyderabad, Sept 28: Megastar Chiranjeevi will embark on a state-wide tour next week to take his newly-floated Praja Rajyam party closer to the people.

He will start the much-awaited tour from Srikakulam district, the northeastern tip of Andhra Pradesh. After covering the coastal districts, the star will visit Telangana region in the second phase. The third phase will take him to Rayalseema region.

I will cover 50 km every day interacting with the people and explaining to them the policies of Praja Rajyam,’ he told a news conference here Sunday.

Chiranjeevi, who floated his party Aug 26, the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, will be launching a week-long flag festival, "Oroora Praja Rajyam" (Praja Rajyam in every town) — a massive mass contact programme – from Oct 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. During the festival, the party flags will be hoisted in every village, town and city.

The party will also launch its membership drive on the same day. ‘I will give first membership to physically challenged Balakrishna Naidu and I will take the second membership,’ Chiranjeevi said. He had already announced the physically challenged youth would be the first member of the party.

The Praja Rajyam founder said the party would also plant 10 million trees all over the state during the flag festival. He asked all his fans and supporters to take part wholeheartedly in the plantation drive to increase the green cover and save the environment.

Amitabh finds his greatest fan

27 Sep 2008[TNN]: The Bachchans’s tour seemed to be one ‘fan’fare, literally speaking. Amitabh Bachchan was most touched by Rochelle, a little girl who made it a point to attend every concert put up by the Bachchans. She observed the backstage action, attended the shows, followed the Bachchans to their hotels, waited at the gates for hours for just a peek and when she returned home, she quickly wrote about it all on her blog. It looks like this little girl could give all his fans tough competition all alone. “She is a Sherlock Holmes in the making,” says Bachchan, who makes it a point to read Rochelle’s blogs. And we thought he was only busy writing his!

Chiranjeevi finds fault with SEZ policies of previous regimes

Polepalli (Mahbubnagar dist.)[Hindu]: Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi on Friday launched an attack on previous governments for not considering the interests of farmers while establishing Special Economic Zones. Expressing concern over the plight of farmers displaced by the Pharma SEZ here, he said, “While SEZs are essential as they spawn industrial development, they cannot be set up by depriving poor farmers of their land.” As many as 56 out of the 250 SEZs in the country were in Andhra Pradesh, and it was regrettable that they were carved out of fertile lands owned by poor farmers. “It is not real development when it is achieved at the cost of hungry stomachs.” Mr. Chiranjeevi spent over three hours in the area where the government had acquired about 1,000 acres in Polepalli, Mudireddipalle and Gundlagadda Thanda in Jadcherla mandal for the Pharma SEZ in 2001-02. Two companies are putting up their facility and only 153 acres is in use. He also visited the houses of three displaced families. Addressing an impressive gathering from atop a vehicle under blazing sun, the actor-turned-politician drew applause when he said that farmers had become labourers after acquisition of their land. He said farmers cherished the small piece of land that they could call their own and were so sentimental that elders would be buried in a corner of the holding. Asserting that his party would stand by the displaced farmers led by the Polepalli SEZ Vythireka Samiti (Struggle Committee Against Polepalli SEZ), he demanded that the government allocate alternative land and houses to them, apart from paying an additional sum of money in tune with the rising land prices. Farmers who lost their lands were not reaping the full benefit considering that allocation of SEZs invariably led to a real estate boom.

Shankar throws Meera out of his movie

spreading to Tamil also. The beautiful and talented actress is facing an unofficial ban from acting in Malayalam films. Now, super hit director Shankar has reportedly shown Meera the way out from his Ananthapurathu Veedu. Meera is performing well in Kannada and Telugu with good offers in hand, but the ban in Malayalam came at a time when she was getting exciting offers and the industry sees it as a setback to her career. Sources say that Meera has no one but herself to blame for all the things that went wrong. She was blacklisted from Malayalam for refusing to do AMMA’s Twenty:20 even when AMMA made it clear that all actors should compulsorily participate in it.
While it is not clear what went wrong between Shankar and Meera, some suggest that Meera failed to report for shooting on the dates she had given for the film. The crew looked for other options after waiting for a few days, which included replacing Meera with a suitable actress. But sources close to Meera say that the actress withdrew from the film due to some creative differences between her and the film’s young hero Nanda. Although Meera still has some projects in Tamil like Aadi Narayana and Mariyadhai, it needs to be seen what all these black marks can do to her career in the South.

Amitabh Bachchan Likely To Sign An International Film Project

Amitabh Bachchan has said that he is likely to sign an international film project to be made by makers of the 2006 Oscar-winning documentary “March of the Penguin”. Meetings here have been going well. There are some more to be conducted tomorrow and from the looks of it there may be consent on the French project. It will be in English, produced and directed by French personnel, those who made ‘March of the Penguin’, the Oscar winner and it will be set in India and France. Perhaps work starts next year end. That is all that one can talk of right now.

Salman Khan loses Katrina to Shah Rukh

Mumbai, Sept 23 (Zee): It is turning out to be a bad year for bad boy with golden heart – Salman Khan. After the infamous spat with Shah Rukh in girlfriend Katrina’s birthday party, Bollywood had been divided into two camps. Salman lost many of his dear ones to bitter rival Shah Rukh. After she agreed to do ‘Temptation Reloaded’ with SRK, Katrina, not minding the spat between the Khans, has signed a new film with SRK. And if sources are to be believed, she nodded to the YRF venture during Sallu Miya’s absence. Katrina’s final nod to Yash Chopra came on Sept 16 - the day Salman left for his 40 day shoot in Paris and London for Vipul Shah’s ‘London Dreams’. Poor chap! The Bachchans – Big and Small, are also in the YRF star cast to spice up things further. The film is to be directed by the legendary director himself. Perhaps, this further induced Sallu’s lady love to assert her independence and she was approached by none other than Yash Raj Chopra! Added to this, there is SRK’s ‘Temptations Reloaded’ tour round the corner. The event will take place in mid-October in Dubai, where Katrina is all set to perform with Shah Rukh, while Salman is away in London. Katrina is already doing a Yash Raj produced film, opposite Salman’s another enemy, John Abraham. It seems that Salman’s lady love is spreading her wings and is ready to fly. Let’s see whether Sallu shows his violent bad boy side to Katrina or his golden heart by congratulating his sweetheart on her success. Either ways, the loss is his. Accept our sympathies, Sallu!

Madhuri Dixit to return with Ek do teen

If our source is to be believed Madhuri Dixit is all set to return to the screen with an item song in John Matthew Matthan’s next film, A Love Iiisshtory which toplines Himesh Reshammiya and Niharika Singh. Reportedly, Reshammiya plays a tapori in the film, a la Aamir Khan of Rangeela. What’s more the singer-actor who’s a stuntman is a huge fan of Aamir Khan and even impersonates Munna from Rangeela. Remixed number“In Tezaab we saw Madhuri dancing to the chartbuster, Ek do teen. She’ll be grooving to the same tune again. The only difference is that this time Himesh will be joining her on stage,” informs the source. When contacted Reshammiya acknowledged that he would be dancing to a remix of the Ek do teen number in A Love Iisshtory but couldn’t confirm whether Dixit had been roped in for it. He said, “This must be a sudden development. I wasn’t aware that any actress had been finalised for this item number. You’ll have to speak to John.” The director was unavailable for comment.

Venkatesh in ‘Kamal Haasan’s Marmayogi’

These days, unusual combinations are happening in South Indian film industry. Actors from Tamil and Telugu are pairing together to get wider reach. The biggest of all combinations is Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh. Yes, you read it right. Our Telugu top hero Venky has reportedly agreed to play a very crucial and important role in Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Marmayogi to be launched very soon. When Kamal approached Venky and narrated the story, Venkatesh immediately has agreed to do the role in the movie. Marmayogi is directed by Kamal and produced by Pyramid Saimira. Trisha and Shriya are acting in the movie which is a period flick. Venky who always said that he is open to do multi-starre movies provided the right script should come is looking forward to Kamal’s Marmayogi. Currently, he is mulling over to cater dates for it. - telugucinema

Shah Rukh Khan Fan frenzy picturised

Directed by Priyadarshan, Billoo Barber also has Lara Dutta and Irrfan Khan in the cast. The team is currently in Mumbai after finishing their shooting schedule in Pollachi in Tamil Nadu.
“It is a grand dance number that is aimed at establishing how big SRK is not only in India but also abroad. It will show his Michael Jackson kind of appeal among his fans. There’s a montage of videos that show how his fans go berserk on seeing him. It will also include the star’s personal experiences with his fans as the backdrop,” reveals choreographer Pony Verma..
SRK plays himself in the movie and has an extended guest appearance in it. He is set to act for around 45 minutes and do a couple of ‘item’ numbers.
“We are currently busy shooting for this dance number. It will be a spectacle. Priyadarshan is not leaving any stone unturned to create a big hype around the movie,” she says. Pony adds, “We wish to begin the film with this sequence. It will establish Shah Rukh as the most sought after and followed actor in India.”

Australia should assess security risk before Indian tour

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board feels the Australian Cricket Board should assess security before deciding on the Indian tour, since the situation there is not much different from Pakistan.PCB's Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi told Geo News that the Aussies should have strong reasons for touring India later this month. The bomb blasts took place in Delhi where Australia are to play a Test match next month. But even then I am 100% certain that the Australians will tour India because a lot of money is involved in the tour. We will have to wait and see what excuse they make when they reach India for the series. He also disclosed that the West Indies Cricket Board has promised to send their side for three one dayers in December, even if the Test series doesn't materialize.

Bangladesh rebel players face 10-year ban

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh will ban rebel players from playing for the country for 10 years if they participate in any unofficial tournament, its cricket board said on Wednesday.
"The decision will be equally effective for contracted players or coaches if they participate in any cricket event having no approval of the ICC (International Cricket Council) or the BCB," Major-General Sina Ibn Jamali told reporters.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board president was speaking after a board meeting convened to make a decision when seven contracted players applied to the board for early retirement.
Former captain Habibul Bashar, batsmen Shahriar Nafees, Aftab Ahmed, and Nazim Uddin, all-rounder Farhad Reza, wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh and left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain requested early retirement this week without giving a reason.
Bashar and 12 other leading Bangladesh players will form a new team called the Dhaka Warriors in the unofficial Indian Cricket League (ICL) this year, organisers said in New Delhi on Tuesday.
"I never thought that the BCB would impose such a harsh punishment which fits only for match fixers or drug abusers," Bashar told Reuters.
"We signed contracts with ICL to play cricket, not to indulge in any crime."
The Twenty20 league is not recognised by the national governing bodies in the International Cricket Council but Basher said their contracts bound the league to release them to represent their country.
Bashar, his former deputy Nafees, wicketkeeper Ghosh and all-rounder Alok Kapali were presented at an ICL news conference in the Indian capital on Tuesday where Bashar told reporters all-rounders Reza and Ahmed had also signed.

‘Billoo Barber’ Postponed! SRK Rattled By ‘Kuselan’ Failure!

Sept. 16, 2008: Shah Rukh Khan has postponed the release of his home production Billoo Barber to early next year. Rattled by the bombing of Rajnikant starrer Kuselan, which has the same storyline, Shah Rukh has decided to tweak his film to ensure its success. Both Billoo Barber and Kuselan are remakes of Malayalam superhit Katha Parayumbol Though a date had not been officially announced, Priyadarshan directed Billoo Barber was widely believed to be slotted for a Diwali week release; October 24 or 29. Sources close to the project tell Sawf News that the film will now release either during the republic day weekend in January or in mid-February 2008. An official from Red Chillies Entertainment, Shah Rukh’s production company that is producing Billoo Barber, told us, "The film is not complete yet, there are two more songs remaining to be canned and a big marketing drive is being planned. With all this remaining how can the film release in just over a month’s time from now? We are looking forward to early 2009 release." While the official denied Kuselan’s bombing had anything to do with the postponement, our sources tell us both Shah Rukh and Priyadarshan mutually decided to re-shoot certain portions of their film after watching reactions to Kuselan. "Even the running time of the film would be kept in check, not going over 150 minutes. Kuselan and Katha Paraayumbol both had running times close to three hours and dragged at places. SRK and Priyadarshan want to leave no stone unturned in making the film compact and effective in carry across its emotions. One of the two songs that are remaining to be shot will be shot in a very huge scale with costs running into crores." the source added. A different source told us, "Following Kuselan’s bombing, a Diwali release for Billoo Barber was immediately ruled out. Shah Rukh then looked at a mid-November release but that would have pitted his film against good friend Karan Johar’s Dostana. "His Yash Raj film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, directed by another good friend, Aditya Chopra, was slated for a December 12 release. Shah Rukh Khan is wary of releasing two of his most ambitious projects in close succession. Besides, he always goes into over drive when marketing his films; with two films he would have risked over exposure." Billoo Barber headlines Shah Rukh Khan, Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta. Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone make cameo appearances.

Aishwarya Rai inclined to star opposite Will Smith

Mumbai, Sept 16: It seems like marriage between Bollywood and Hollywood is inevitable. News has it that Bollywood’s ‘Bahu’ Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is reading a Hollywood script that stars none other than comedy star Will Smith. Although, the beautiful actress is inclined towards the tempting project, she has not given her consent to it yet. Speaking to a news daily, Aishwarya said, “There is the possibility of a movie with Will Smith and I am very excited about it because the script is fabulous and no doubt, he is a great actor and is a funny companion to work with.” After starring in interesting Hollywood projects like ‘Mistress of Spices’ and ‘The Last Legion’, Aishwarya is excited about Will Smith’s next. Aishwarya admits to reading other scripts from Hollywood also and said that she would leave it to destiny to resolve. Expressing her gratitude for the international attention she is getting, the actress said, "I consider myself very fortunate to have enjoyed a fantastic support from a widespread section of audience… I am very thankful for that kind of love and support because it has given me the confidence and strength of enjoying myself and explore different genres, be it art, commercial or historical, I have done it all." Meanwhile, Will Smith, who is a self-confessed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan fan, affirmed that Ash was his first choice to star in `Hancock` and `Seven Pounds` too. But, the lady had politely declined both the offers due to prior commitments. Perhaps, this time Will Smith will have his way. The comedy star has expressed his wish to act in a Bollywood movie himself stating that the future of international cinema lies in the marriage of Hollywood and Bollywood. Grapevine also has it that the gorgeous actress has hiked also her price to a throbbing six crores per movie. The lady has pocketed the enormous sum for her Tamil movie ‘Enthiram’ opposite Tamil superstar Rajinikanth (Zee)

Money, Money, Money; and Excuses, Excuses

"Cricket must be the only business," wrote the journalist Pat Gibson in 1975, "where you can make more money in one day than you can in three." Today at 2pm we will discover which England players are to be given the chance to make more money in three hours than they can in an entire season. It is a measure of the way the game has changed that the squad to travel to Antigua for the $20m Twenty20 match on November 1 will create far more of a stir than the names to tour India or - even if Michael Vaughan is included - the recipients of a new batch of central contracts.

Exit sign looms large

Sourav Ganguly has forever confounded the knowledgeable and silenced the detractor, but this is one battle even the eternal Indian Rubber Man will be hard pressed to win. From all indications, the final act of the most colourful and contentious of careers an Indian cricketer has had has already been played out; notwithstanding the supreme lack of transparency and accountability in the current selectorial set-up, it would appear as if time has finally been called on the international career of India's most successful Test captain to date. The persecution complex Ganguly has sub-consciously carried since being jettisoned for four and a half years after the ill-fated tour of Australia in 1991-92 might lead the tempestous Kolkatan to believe that he is, again, being singled out for a less than acceptable performance by India's super-strong middle-order in the recent Test series in Sri Lanka. There might be some logic in that line of thought, but the fact of the matter is that while the others in that middle-order have something more than just batting to offer, Ganguly's utility to the team diminishes the moment he is done with his stint at the batting crease.Fashionable as it is to bracket VVS Laxman in the same category as Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly, it must be kept in mind that the Hyderabadi is a good year and a half younger than the youngest of that triumvirate. It won't be until November 1 that Laxman will turn 34, and while he has the numbers to back him up, he has for long been the most expendable member of that group when team balance has dictated that India go in with five specialist batsmen. At number six, the man with the wrists of steel hasn't always had the luxury of batting long stretches with a specialist batsman for company, a fact conveniently ignored when statistics are tossed around carelessly.

RP working on slower delivery for series against Australia

Rudra Pratap Singh reckons varying pace would be the key against Australia [Images] and the Uttar Pradesh [Images] left-arm pacer says he has developed a slower ball that would prove quite a handful for Ricky Ponting [Images] and his men when they arrive for a Test series in India next month.
RP says the Aussies would prove tough customer even when they are playing away and the surprise element should be there if a bowler has to succeed against them.
"As a preparation for the Australia series I am just concentrating on my basics," said RP, insisting he would otherwise like to keep things simple.
"But I am trying some new variations as well and have developed a new slower delivery," RP said on the sidelines of an interactive session with the students of Amity University in Noida on Wednesday.
"Besides, I'm also working on bouncers," he added.
The Indians will have to be at their best to thwart the Australians and they are likely to roll out dust-bowls against the visitors to suit their traditional spin strength.
RP, however, felt they can afford to play on lively pitches which would have something for the spinner as well.
"I would prefer lively pitches, which should be fair to all and make it an even contest between bat and ball," said RP, known as an intelligent bowler with a natural ability to swing the ball both ways.
India will have a decent pool of pacers to chose from for the four-match Test series against Australia and RP says the competition for the berths augurs well for the team.
"This healthy competition is good for Indian cricket. Personally too, you get to learn so many things. Even a senior bowler learns things from the youngsters, especially their mental approach," he said.
RP also stressed on the need for a strict fitness regime to restrict injuries to a minimum and keep going.
"Injury is a part of our life, we can't escape it. But if we follow a strict fitness regime and work on the trainer's instructions, we can at least reduce it," he said.
RP shares a good chemistry with his one day and Twenty20 [Images] captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images] and the left-arm seamer is forthright about whom he wants to see as India's next Test captain.
"Anil Kumble [Images] is good captain, he has everything what it needs. But if somebody becomes the next Test captain, it will be Dhoni," RP said.

Dhoni, Tendulkar named in World ODI XI

DUBAI: India's captain for shorter version of the game Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) One-Day International World side captained by Australian Ricky Ponting for the second year running. The team was announced on Wednesday. Ponting is in the team for the third consecutive year. The ODI team for 2008 (in batting order): Hershelle Gibbs (SA), Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), Ricky Ponting (Aus, captain), Yunus Khan (Pak), Andrew Symonds (Aus), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Ind), Farveez Maharoof (SL), Daniel Vettori (NZ), Brett Lee (Aus), Mitchell Johnson (Aus), Nathan Bracken (Aus), 12th man: Salman Butt (Pak). The presentations were made by ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle. Chairman of the ICC Awards Selection Panel, Clive Lloyd, said his panel felt it had selected a great team, full of variation, depth and potential match-winners in every department. Lloyd was joined on the panel by former Australia captain Greg Chappell, recently retired South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock, former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny and former Bangladesh batsman Athar Ali Khan. Statistics were available as a guide but were not necessarily the overwhelming factor in the choices made.

MNS activists tear off Bachchan

MUMBAI, 8 Sep 2008[TOI]: Raj Thackeray on Monday said his party Maharashtrian Navnirman Sena (MNS) will not allow release of films starring Bachchans till Jaya Bachchan tenders an unconditional apology over her alleged anti-Marathi remarks. “Maharashtrians should boycott all products endorsed by the Bachchans who have "poison in their minds" for Marathi people,“ the MNS chief said. An apparent off-the-cuff remark by actress Jaya Bachchan supporting the use of Hindi language by north Indians in Maharashtra has snowballed into a major controversy. MNS demanded an apology from her, saying she has insulted the Marathi people. At the Drona film promo, Jaya had said "hum UP ke log hain, hamein Hindi mein baat karni chahiye" (we are from Uttar Pradesh and should speak in Hindi). "Can she dare utter such remarks in Assam, where people are killed for speaking in Hindi," a Sena leader said. "She should go to states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala and propagate Hindi there," he added. Sena spokesperson and Jaya Bachchan’s colleague in Rajya Sabha Sanjay Raut had said: "People of Maharashtra will not tolerate such language." "The Bachchans have been living here for so many years and saying that they do not know the local language is an insult to Marathi people," MNS leader Yashwant Killedar had said.

India gets NSG waiver

Vienna/New Delhi (Ibnlive): The 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has approved a US plan to engage in nuclear trade with India. Following the green signal by the NSG that will cement the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation, India has finally come out of the 34-year old nuclear apartheid. India had been forced into nuclear isolation following the 1974 Pokharan atomic tests and ironically the NSG was formed in reaction to those tests. The approval came after almost three days of meeting in Vienna on Saturday. The NSG meet was called to minimise any damage to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which India has not joined. The consensus was arrived after overcoming misgivings expressed by Austria, Ireland and New Zealand and is an unprecedented step in giving exemption to a country, which has not signed the NPT and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). A statement issued by Austrian Foreign Ministry said, "After protracted negotiations, the NSG today adopted an exemption for nuclear exports to India. We are finally convinced by Pranab’s (India’s External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee) statement and India’s commitment to Non proliferation. We continue to have concerns on language on testing but we will not block consensus." Austrian Foreign Ministry Peter Launsky said, "A sense of relief is prevailing over here." After protracted negotiations, the NSG today adopted an exemption for nuclear exports to India There was jubilation in the Congress camp with Prime Minister, who won a vote of confidence on July 22 on the issue of going to the NSG, said, "It’s a historic deal." Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said, "It’s a red letter day for India. It’s not just the Prime Minister. The deal shows that the perseverance and vision of the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi ended the nuclear apartheid. We have been made a special exemption. This would be seen as India’s red letter day when we broke the nuclear deadlock." "As far as BJP is concerned the grapes are sour from them. Left has its own ideological view and lives in a time warp," Tiwari added. “We have been able to convince the world about this deal.” The Indo-US nuclear deal needed approval from the NSG as it governs legal trade in nuclear components and technology. However, the nuclear deal still needs to be ratified by the US Congress before it could take force. The Congress must act before adjourning in late September for US presidential elections. If that does not happen then the deal could be left to an uncertain fate under a new US administration that takes office next year. Former Indian foreign secretary and former ambassador to the US, Lalit Mansingh hailed it as a major victory for India. "It’s a significant victory for India and a milestone in nuclear equity. India did the right thing by standing firm and highlighting its red lines. Now 34 years of nuclear apartheid is finally over. But there is still one more hurdle to overcome which is the US congress. If this were a marathon, I would say we have won the silver medal. We’ll hopefully win the gold medal by the end of this year," Mansingh said. Facts about NSG:
It is a 45-nation cartel that controls trade in "dual-use" nuclear fuel, materials and technology to ensure they are applied only to civilian nuclear energy programmes, not diverted into clandestine nuclear weapons work.
The NSG was formed in reaction to India’s shock 1974 nuclear test explosion, using reactor technology provided by Canada in the 1950s supposedly for peaceful energy development.
Group policy has been to do business only with countries belonging to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty — the only outsiders are India, Pakistan and Israel — and permitting "full-scope" inspections by the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
The NSG website says: "(We seek) to contribute to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons through the implementation of guidelines for nuclear exports and nuclear related exports. NSG guidelines are implemented by each participating government in accordance with its national laws and practices. Decisions on export applications are taken at the national level in accordance with national export licensing requirements."
In 2002, NSG export controls were updated to help prevent the threat of nuclear terrorism as well.
NSG members are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States.
The cartel normally has one annual plenary meeting and decisions are made by consensus only. Members can also hold consultative sessions. The NSG has no permanent office and details of its deliberations are kept confidential.
The 2008-09 NSG chairman is Germany.

US Open Day 11: Not The Roger Federer Of Old But The Outcome Is Familiar

NEW YORK - It may not have been the Roger Federer of old, but the outcome was familiar. The Swiss superstar is in a Grand Slam semifinal for a record 18th straight time.
Seeking his fifth straight US Open title - a feat that hasn’t been done since Bill Tilden did it in 1924 - Federer overcame a surprisingly strong performance by qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (5) 6-4 7-6 (5).
“It was really difficult,” Federer said. “Gilles played a really fantastic tournament. … It was hard just to get solid contact on his serve.”
Federer has not won a Grand Slam tournament title since last year’s Open - his 12th major title, two behind the men’s record held by Pete Sampras.
“I was very happy the way I pulled it out at the end because it looked like it was going (to a) fourth (set),” Federer said. “You try to stay positive, but you look at the score and sometimes it’s not good.”
Muller may have come out of the qualifying and been a surprise quarterfinalist, but he gave Federer all the tournament’s number two seed could handle. The left-hander’s big game - he finished with 16 aces - matched Federer for much of the afternoon.
“It was tough today, especially to break against the wind,” Federer said. “It was almost impossible. He’s a big guy. He gets great angles and he’s got a lot of safety in his serve, especially the first serve. He does have great variety.”
It was the first time the best player from Luxembourg has made it past the third round at a Grand Slam tournament, and only once did he make it that far, at Wimbledon in 2005 when he upset Rafael Nadal in the second round. Prior to this year, Muller had won only one match on the hard courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Center, and that was an first-round upset of Andy Roddick three years ago.
The two held serve through the first set, with Federer stymied when he had two set points on Muller’s serve in the 12th game. Federer then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak before Muller pulled even at 4-4.
Four points later, Federer rifled a backhand down the line that Muller got his racquet on, but was unable to control his shot and his volley went wide.

Chiru accused of role in inter-caste marriage

Hyderabad Sept. 4: Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi found himself in the midst of a controversy after he attended the wedding of Chetan, son of Katti Padma Rao, his party colleague and well-known Dalit writer. The film star-turned-politician set off a fierce protest from Tammina Subba Rao and T. Mani, parents of the bride, Nalini, for reportedly calling her as his ‘adopted daughter’ at the wedding which was performed in their absence in ‘casteless tradition’ on Saturday last. The actor’s aides said he had only attended the marriage as a guest. Mr Tammina Subba Rao and Mrs T. Vani of Gokavaram village in West Godavari district, told mediapersons that their daughter Nalini was abducted and brought to the city. The couple said they came to the city after getting a phone call from their daughter informing that she was in the poet’s house in Erramanzil Colony. When they met Mr Padma Rao, he suggested that Nandini be allowed to marry his son Chetan as they were both majors. The parents did not approve of this and insisted on speaking to the girl. “We came to know that marriage was performed with the blessings of Chiranjeevi,” said Mr Subba Rao. The shocked parents rushed to the office of Praja Rajyam. “The people there sent us away saying they had no information about the girl,” said Ms Vani Rao. “Chiranjeevi not only attended the marriage at Film Nagar Club in Jubilee Hills but announced that he would adopt the girl.” She said Chiranjeevi, who was upset by his own daughter’s elopement, should have talked to them. The couple threatened to hold a dharna and a hunger strike before the party office if Chiranjeevi did not hand over their daughter in the next 24 hours. “We are not opposed to our daughter’s wishes but we believe she was forced to marry,” said Ms Vani Rao. “Chiranjeevi, who spoke so much about his mother, should have understood our agony.” Mr Padma Rao denied that Nalini was forced and added that the actor had no role in the marriage. “Her parents are against the inter-caste marriage though we asked them to consider the children’s love for each other,” he said. The PR spokesperson, Mr P. Prabhakar, said Chiranjeevi had not promised to adopt the girl. “He just attended the marriage as a guest,” he said.

Rajni’s ‘Robot’ renamed ’Enthiram’

Hit-making director Shankar has reportedly decided to give a new name to his mega project, which till now had gone with the title ‘Robot’. The Rajnikanth-starrer will now have a new name- ‘Enthiram: The Robot’. Rajnikanth had earlier announced that the film, produced by London-based Ayngaran Films International (P) Ltd., would get a Tamil title soon. The Tamil title wasn’t intended to get the tax-exemption but to honour the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to patronize films with Tamil titles. ‘Eyanthira’ and ‘Eyanthiran’ were earlier considered and the final choice fell on the title ‘Enthiram: The Robot’ The film, which is arguably the first ever full fledged sci-fi film in Tamil, is said to be based on two novels titled ‘En Iniya Iyanthira’ and ‘Jeeno’, written by popular Tamil writer Sujatha. Three photo-shoots have been held to promote the film, including one that was done in Hollywood last week. The shooting is expected to kick off in Brazil by this weekend. Shankar’s team is already in Brazil to oversee the arrangements while Shankar, Rajnikanth and other actors and crew members are expected to leave for Brazil soon, to be joined shortly by the lead lady, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Produced at a whopping budget of Rs.140 crores, the film is said to be the most expensive film to have been ever made in India in any language.

Serena wins latest battle in war of Williams sisters

EIGHT-TIME grand slam tournament winner Serena Williams has advanced to the semi-finals of the US Open after coming from behind in a pair of tie-breakers to defeat her sister Venus 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (9-7).
Venus and Serena have met twice in the US Open final, with the older Venus winning in 2001 before losing to Serena the following year.
This was a brilliant match featuring long rallies and precision shot-making but also a number of uncharacteristic errors from Venus, who went 0-for-10 on set points. "It felt like the final of the US Open. I can't believe I won. Wow," Serena said. "It was difficult because she is such a great player."
Serena booked a semi-final berth against Russian Dinara Safina, who outclassed Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-3 in the other quarter-final on Wednesday.
Safina is trying to follow in the footsteps of her big brother, Marat Safin, and win her first grand slam title at a US Open.
The other semi-final will be between Russian Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in a super Friday of women's matches at Flushing Meadows.
Serena, who lost to her sister earlier this year in the Wimbledon final, has now won nine of their 17 matches.
"I tried not to look at her. If I did, I might start feeling sorry for her," Serena said.
"I caught myself looking at her once and I had to say to myself, 'Serena, keep your head down'."
"She played well and kept a lot of balls in play," Venus said. "I was just praying on some shots tonight. I would get up and feel confident but for whatever reason didn't get the point. Nothing I planned.
"That's tennis. It is never over until it is over."
Russian sixth seed Safina, who reached her first grand slam tournament final earlier this year at the French Open, said winning the US Open would put a fitting exclamation point on her season.
The 185-centimetre Safina, 22, needed only 71 minutes to reach her first US Open semi-final. "It's great," Safina said. "I'm getting closer to reaching the same thing as my brother. I just hope that one day I can have the same title."
Big brother Marat won the US Open men's title in 2000.
Men's sixth seed Andy Murray advanced to the men's semi-finals after a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-5 victory over 17th-seeded Argentinian sensation Juan Martin del Potro.
Murray ensured his rise to a career-high fourth in next week's ATP rankings, matching the highest spot any British man has ever held, by halting the South American's 23-match winning streak to reach his first grand slam tournament semi-final.
"I'm very relieved," Murray said. "I had my chances to put it away earlier and let it slip away. It was unbelievable."
The lanky 21-year-old Scotsman booked a Saturday date against top-ranked Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion, who is 5-0 against Murray.

Rafael Nadal through to the semis at US Open, Federer still to play

Rafael Nadal reached the semifinals at the 2008 US Open tennis tournament on September 4 2008 for the first time in his career less than a month after he became world number one and won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
Nadal played against American Mardy Fish who started well and managed to win the first set 6-3. While the home crowd was rooting for a sensational American victory over Nadal, the latter proved why he is considered the best tennis player in the world, quickly winning the next three sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Fish’s mistakes certainly helped the Spaniard to reach the semifinals where he will play against Britain's top player Andy Murray. Murray advanced to the semifinals after winning against Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro (7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5). Murray, like Nadal, will play his first ever semi-final at the US Open.
The advantage, however, is on Nadal's side because of the five times the two have faced each other, Nadal has always emerged as the winner.
So far Nadal has notched up a total of 75 wins in his career and only eight losses. If he wins the US Open Nadal will become the first tennis player to have won three consecutive Grand Slam titles. Earlier in the year Nadal won the French Open and Wimbledon after beating current number two and former number one Roger Federer on both occasions.
Federer is yet to play his quarterfinal game at the US Open against Gilles Muller, Luxembourg’s qualifier, who managed to dismiss Russia's Nikolay Davydenko in the fourth round of the tournament.

Federer, Djokovic Advance to Semifinal Meeting at U.S. Open

Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, where they'll meet in a rematch of last year's final.
Federer defeated qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at the National Tennis Center in New York to continue his quest for a fifth straight U.S. Open title. Djokovic was a 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) winner over Andy Roddick, who was the last American left at the year's final Grand Slam tournament.
Switzerland's Federer and Serbia's Djokovic will meet in one men's semifinal in two days, while Spain's Rafael Nadal plays Britain's Andy Murray for the other spot in the final.
``He's absolutely the favorite,'' Djokovic said of Federer in a televised courtside interview. ``I lost to him last year. For him it's a big challenge to go back to the No. 1 spot in the world.''
Those Sept. 6 semifinals could be disrupted by rain from Tropical Storm Hanna, said the U.S. Tennis Association, which has contingency plans for alternate schedules in case of bad weather conditions.
The women's semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow, when Russia's Elena Dementieva faces Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams of the U.S. plays Dinara Safina of Russia. The women's final is scheduled for Sept. 6.
Federer Advances
Federer needed 56 minutes and seven set points before winning the first set against the 130th-ranked Muller in a tiebreaker. He took the second set after winning a game on Muller's serve at 4-4, the lone service break of the match.
Muller had rallied from 0-2 deficits twice in his first four matches, the first player to do so at the U.S. Open since Aaron Krickstein in 1986. He couldn't find the same success against the second-seeded Federer, who overcame a 4-1 deficit in the third-set tiebreak to advance to the semifinals of a Grand Slam for a record 18th straight time.
``He's been serving great, so I didn't get that many opportunities,'' Federer, 27, said. ``Straight sets is the best result. I'm very happy the way I came and pulled it out in the end because it looked like it was going for four.''
Federer hasn't lost at the U.S. Open since 2003, the third- longest streak in tournament history. Helen Wills won 46 matches in a row from 1927-33 and Bill Tilden took 42 straight from 1920-26. Tilden in 1924 was the last man to claim a fifth straight U.S. Open title. He went on to a sixth victory the following year.
Federer's 36 career hard-court titles are tied with Pete Sampras for the second-most in history, yet this is the first season since 2001 that he's come to New York without having won a hard-court tournament. This is the farthest he's advanced in four hard-court singles events season, having most recently lost in the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics.
Djokovic Booed
Federer is 6-2 all-time against Djokovic, including a straight sets win in last year's final.
Djokovic, 21, won the first two sets against Roddick by converting all four of his break-point opportunities. Roddick had his serve broken three times in his first four wins.
After serving just two aces in dropping the first two sets, Roddick fired eight in taking the third set from the third- seeded Djokovic, this year's Australian Open winner.
Serving for the set at 5-4 in the fourth, Roddick had consecutive double-faults and was broken when Djokovic dropped a backhand lob over his head. Djokovic went on to win the tiebreak and celebrated the victory by pounding on his chest when Roddick's final shot sailed long.
Djokovic, who has said he's been bothered by several injuries during the tournament, drew catcalls from the stands when he complained after the match that Roddick had questioned the extent of his physical problems.
``Andy was saying I had 16 injuries in the last match,'' Djokovic said as the crowd booed. ``They're obviously against me because they think I'm faking everything. That's not nice to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries.''

Hansikaa Motwani's 15 children

Li'l girl Hansikaa Motwani seems to have grown up. The actor who celebrated her 17th birthday last month (ought we believe her age?) did something more than special on her big day. She took up the responsibility for the education and general welfare of 15 orphaned children! Hansikaa was celebrating more than just her birthday. Apparently, her South hit film Desamuduru completed 275 days and is still going strong! Hardly sometime before Desam... turns one, eh, and gives Hansi even more reason to celebrate!

Soha-Siddarth, yet another fight

According to industry buzz, Soha Ali Khan and her actor boyfriend Siddharth have again had a major fight, with Siddharth walking out of her Mumbai house. Common friends have revealed that the actor stays at Soha’s apartment in Bandra whenever he’s in Mumbai, a city he’s found hard to adjust to. The two are said to have often had differences and fights because of their contrasting personalities. While Soha is an extrovert, Siddharth is a loner and extremely moody. He has also chosen to keep their relationship under wraps, much to Soha’s frustration who’s much in love with him. Their latest fight apparently took place a day before Saif’s birthday party last month, following which Siddharth walked out of Soha’s house and went to stay elsewhere. Though the two were seen together at Saif’s party, Siddharth was not too keen on being photographed with Soha. Was it just a routine tiff or something major? We’ll only know with time.

Katrina on top with six hits in a row: critics

New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS): British-born actress Katrina Kaif has delivered six back-to-back hits, bagged several brand endorsements and is now a highly sought after heroine - all the qualities needed to be crowned the reigning actress in Bollywood, say film critics.
"Katrina has immensely evolved as an actress. In Bollywood, actors are mostly known for the number of hits that they can deliver. Katrina has won in that respect hands down. She can undoubtedly be called a lucky mascot for her producers," popular film critic Taran Adarsh told IANS over phone from Mumbai. After wowing audiences in the recently released romantic comedy "Singh Is Kinng" opposite Akshay Kumar, Katrina has successfully displaced top-rung actors, including Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra. Her success story started with "Namastey London" and continued with "Apne", "Partner", "Welcome", "Race" and now "Singh Is Kinng". "Last year was simply fantastic and, touchwood, this year is the same. I would like to thank god. I believe in enjoying doing the work I’m doing. It is also good to know that the hard work I have put in has shown result. I will continue to do so," Katrina said. The 24-year-old star ventured into Bollywood in 2003 and was instantly written off because of her strong British accent. But after five years of hard work and determination, she is one of the most sought after actresses in the Hindi film industry. Her next is Subhash Ghai’s "Yuvraaj", which is about the arrogance and overconfidence of contemporary youth. Set to release in October, critics are confident that Katrina has another hit on the anvil in "Yuvraaj". Mumbai-based film critic Anupama Chopra says there are high expectations from Katrina’s performance in the movie. "Katrina has had a fortunate choice of films" even though she "had a rather unfortunate start with ’Boom’," Chopra said. "She is a stunning looking actress and so far she is doing well with her glam doll image. We did see glimpses of an actor in her performance-oriented roles such as in ’Namastey London’," Chopra explained. Katrina is one of eight siblings, all girls. Her mother is British and her father is from Jammu and Kashmir who has since acquired British citizenship. The actress spent her formative years in Hawaii but later moved to London. She started modelling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the age of 14. Thereafter she continued modelling in London till she moved to Mumbai in quest of a career in the world’s largest film industry. She has also moved on to bigger banners and has teamed up with John Abraham and Neil Mukesh for a Yash Raj Films’ project. Apart from that, she will be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi’s next film, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", with Ranbir Kapoor. Besides spinning gold at the box office, Katrina also has an assorted line-up of brand endorsements. These include Nakshatra diamond jewellery and Veet hair removal cream among others. The actress created waves when she replaced Aishwarya Rai as the brand ambassador of Nakshatra last month, besides bagging the crown of being the most downloaded Indian actress in cyber space. "Katrina is the perfect representation of the young, trendy and fashionable woman that Nakshatra targets. We feel that Katrina lends a refreshing look to the brand. We are excited about having her on board as the new face for Nakshatra," said Mehul Choksi, chairman, Gitanjali Group and Nakshatra. Though the actress has acquired a star status in a short span, critics feel that she needs to work on more performance-based roles. Said Chopra: "Katrina needs to evolve and emerge out of her glamorous image to do meatier roles like the ones Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta were doing two to three years ago."

Rani Mukerji hates being called a Yash Raj heroine

Mumbai, Sep 3 (IANS): Rani Mukerji is upset about being branded as a resident Yash Raj Films heroine despite having done a large number of films with the banner.
"What exactly do people mean by this? Agreed Rani has done comparatively more films with the Yash Raj banner. But that’s because any heroine in Bollywood would be foolish to turn down an author-backed heroine-centric part like ’Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’. And so what if the film didn’t work? She’s very proud of the film and rates it among her best films," a source close to the actress told IANS. Rani has recently featured in three Yash Raj Films’ productions - "Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic", "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" and "Ta Ra Rum Pum". Earlier, she has done films like "Bunty Aur Babli", "Veer-Zaara" and "Hum Tum" for the banner. The source added: "In fact, Rani makes it a point to remind people that lately she did Karan Johar’s ’Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’, Ravi Chopra’s ’Baabul’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ’Saawariya’. None of these is a Yash Raj film." And if rumours are to be believed, Rani is on the verge of signing a couple of films outside the Yash Raj banner. "One, of course, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical ’Bajirao Mastani’, which is far from shelved. Sanjay plans to make the film in the near future. And while the rest of the cast may change, Rani as Bajirao’s wife remains in place. There are other films that Rani is seriously considering," the source said. "Some time ago Rani said no to Mira Nair’s ’Namesake’ for emotional reasons. The excuse was dates. But Rani had her own reasons for foregoing a role that has changed Tabu’s career internationally. "Today, Rani is in a space where she realises being hard-headed and business-like is what Bollywood is all about. She certainly doesn’t want to be branded a Yash Raj heroine." Rumours are rife that Rani acts like a hostess at Yash Raj Studios, but the allegation is strongly denied by people close to the organisation. "This is all in people’s minds. Rani is at home in every production house. Have you seen her with Karan Johar or Sanjay Bhansali? She’s totally relaxed in their homes, has long chats with their moms and even goes into their kitchen at will," said the source. At the moment, Rani is busy preparing for her cricket film, which is being directed by Anurag Singh for the Yash Raj banner. "It’s being said she’s agreed to work with a new director because of the banner. But hello … Rani has worked with Kunal Kohli and Shaad Ali. Even Karan Johar was a debutant when Rani did ’Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’."

Salman Khan gets richer by Rs. 150 crores

The overseas distribution rights for Salman Khan’s new historical drama, Veer, have been sold for a record-breaking 150 crores, beating the record of 120 crores set only two weeks ago for Vipul Shah’s London Dreams. This means the movie will need to take at least 40 crores at the Indian box office to be a financial hit and provide the comfort zone required by the distributors. It should already be profitable for the producers provided they stay within budget. The film also stars Sohail Khan and Mithun Chakraborty. Ever since he won the Best Male Debut Award for Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989, Salman has been one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars even when appearing in movies with less than satisfying scripts such as the recent God Tussi Great Ho. In five different years, he has appeared in Bollywood’s highest grossing film and the distributors will no doubt be hoping that Veer will be number six. Amongst his best known films are Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Biwi No.1, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Award, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Tere Naam, No Entry and Partner. Salman’s life is ever-colourful. The stepson of Helen and of course the brother of Sohail Khan, he is currently known for his ex-relationship with Aishwarya Rai and his current one with Katrina Kaif which appears to be stormy on his side but relaxed on hers. A dedicated power builder, he also has a wax dummy of himself in Madame Tussaud’s in London. His high profile and occasional rashness has led him into problems. In 2002, a street dweller died when the car he was driving went off the road and collided with the front of a bakery and in 2006 he was involved in an illegal hunting party. The slow process of the Indian legal system means that elements of both these cases are still on file. Salman’s current rivalry with Shah Rukh Khan has been widely publicized, the two having fallen out big time at Katrina Khan’s birthday party. He is also currently the host of TV’s ’Dus Ka Dum’ game show, where his easy-going charm has won plaudits if not the level of audience that the producers may have wished for. Salman is a gifted artist and has a painting of Aishwarya in his home that it’s said Katrina wants to get rid of but he refuses to part with it. Recently, he also offered to paint Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya’s husband, which should be seen as Salman’s way of making amends for his behaviour after he broke up with Aishwarya. Salman will soon be seen in Heroes and Yuvraaj.

Roddick has easy ride into quarters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American favourite and former champion Andy Roddick marched into the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open with an easy 6-2 6-4 6-1 victory over Chilean 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez on Tuesday.
Roddick's victory in under 90 minutes should leave him relatively fresh for a last-eight showdown with Novak Djokovic, who endured a gruelling five-setter against Tommy Robredo, overcoming hip, stomach, ankle and breathing problems in the three hour 45 minute match.
"I feel good," Roddick said in a courtside interview. "I've got to feel good, he's got about 16 injuries right now."
Roddick will also have a spring in his step when he comes out on Thursday as he has spent just 3-1/2 hours in total dispatching his last two opponents. In comparison, the Australian Open champion has been on court for almost eight hours over the same period.
But Roddick said the 21-year-old Djokovic had youth on his side, as well as a better record in recent months, and that he himself had been fighting various injuries.
"He's had a much better year to this point so it's a matter of if you want to look back 10 days or 10 months," the 2003 U.S. Open champion told reporters. "He's the favourite, and it seems like every grand slam he's having these long drawn out battles."
Still, he made light of Djokovic's litany of woes -- asked about the Serbian's latest injuries, the eighth seed said: "A back and a hip? And a cramp? Bird flu... anthrax... SARS... common cough and cold."
"If it's there, it's there," he added. "There's just a lot. He's either quick to call a trainer or he's the most courageous guy of all time."

Federer advances to U.S. Open fourth round

Another competent tennis pro, 29-year-old Czech Radek Stepanek, looked across the net yesterday and was reminded: He's Roger Federer, and you're not.Stepanek is seeded 28th at the U.S. Open and boasts a nice career resume. He is ranked among the top 30 players in the world for the fourth straight year and two years ago advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals. But Federer again did what Federer does, which is to execute a smooth glide through to the second week of a major tournament with barely a hint of struggle.Federer's 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory put him into the fourth round of a Grand Slam event for the 17th consecutive time. In the previous 16, dating to Wimbledon 2003, Federer has advanced at least to the semifinals, winning 10 of his 12 career major titles over that period, including the last four in Flushing Meadows. He was asked if he could remember the last time he wasn't around for the second week of the two-week majors, and thought of his last U.S. Open loss - in the fourth round to Argentina's David Nalbandian in 2003. That's 30 consecutive match victories in the 127-year-old championships, second on the all-time list to Bill Tilden's 42 straight from 1920-26. And first in the "open" era, which began 40 years ago.
Yesterday Federer's complete package of tennis - 12 aces, first-serve winning percentage of 75 and six converted break points (of 11) - provided the latest verse in Federer's familiar tune of dominance. The evidence that Federer is having an off year, with one semifinal finish and two runner-up trophies in the previous three majors, did not square with the ease of his control so far. To have such an easy time in three straight-sets victories here "is good for me," he agreed, "to not waste any energy. I'm playing well and moving on in the draw."But he is not attempting to "send a message." "Not really," he said. "At the end of the day, what counts is winning the tournament. And, anyway, you forget who you beat, how you won. You forget all the unforced errors you made, and all anybody's going to talk about is the finals. That's how I look at things. I don't try to impress anybody in the early rounds. If it happens, that's great. I don't really care that much."TODAY'S FEATURED MATCHES

Nadal, Williams Sisters, Murray Reach U.S. Open Quarterfinals

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Rafael Nadal moved within three wins of his first U.S. Open tennis title, Serena Williams eased into a quarterfinal meeting with her sister Venus and Andy Murray set up a last eight contest against Juan Martin Del Potro.
The top-ranked Nadal beat big-serving American Sam Querrey 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 at the National Tennis Center in New York. It was the first time the Spaniard dropped a set in the tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year. The players got a standing ovation after the 3 hour, 13 minute match.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams was never in trouble against Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, beating her 6-1, 6-3. Serena, who has also won the title twice, breezed past Severine Bremond of France 6-2, 6-2 in an hour to set up the last eight match against her older sister, who beat her in July's Wimbledon final. They are the only quarterfinalists to have won a Grand Slam.
``It will be a good match,'' the 26-year-old Serena said in a televised interview. ``She's playing incredible. I'm going to have to improve my game.''
Querrey fired 20 aces in his match against Nadal, who served five. The American produced 52 winners to Nadal's 37, while the Spaniard, who said he struggled with the wind at Arthur Ashe Stadium, made 41 unforced errors, eight fewer than his opponent.
`Very Tough'
``It was very tough,'' Nadal said in a televised interview after the match. ``Sam is a big server.''
Watched by 23,000 spectators in the world's biggest tennis arena, Querrey used his 6-foot-6 frame to fire six aces past the Olympic champion and hit 17 winners to Nadal's five in the second set.
In the third set, the 20-year-old Querrey forced a tie- break after fighting back from 3-1 down. Nadal jumped out to a 6-2 lead and converted the first set point.
In the fourth set, Nadal broke the American to lead 4-2. In the next game, the longest of the match, Querrey failed to convert seven break points. Nadal converted his first match point with an overhead smash.
``I was a little nervous, but after an hour or so I found my shots,'' Querrey said in a televised interview. ``I came up a little short. The guy is just too good.''
Federer Ousted
Nadal, 22, took over the No. 1 ranking on Aug. 18, ending the record 237-week run of four-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer. The Spaniard last month became the first man since Bjorn Borg to win the French Open and Wimbledon in one season, both times beating Federer in the final. He has never got past the quarterfinals at New York.
Nadal will next play unseeded American Mardy Fish, who reached the quarterfinals for the first time with a 7-5, 6-2, 6- 2 win over No. 32 seed Gael Monfils.

YSR rejects Chiranjeevi’s allegation on land sale

Hyderabad, Sep 1 (IANS): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has rejected allegations by Telugu superstar-turned-politician Chiranjeevi that his government was acting like a broker by selling land to private companies.
The chief minister said that "criticism for the sake of criticism" was not proper on the part of the new party launched by the actor and he went on to defend the sale of government lands. Participating in a debate on a Telugu television channel, Reddy said the government was developing assets by making use of unproductive government lands that were vulnerable to encroachment. Chiranjeevi, while launching his ‘Praja Rajyam’ in Tirupati Aug 26, came down heavily on the government for selling state-owned land to private companies and for acquiring cultivable land for Special Economic Zones. "The sale of government land amounts to selling away the future of our children. The government should be custodian of these lands and not act as a broker," the actor had said. The chief minister said that land lying idle faced the threat of encroachment and being sold through auction to mobilise funds for various programmes related to public welfare.

Aamir has special promotional plans for Ghajini

Aamir Khan has always been a path breaker in every department and staying true to his reputation is yet again giving his millions of fans something truly ’hatke’. His next release is Ghajini which is all set to come on December 26th. But now instead of opting for a typical "teaser promo" followed by big theatrical promo technique, Aamir has suggested his filmmakers to start work on a never seen before kind of, very user friendly, interactive website for the film. A source told us, "A leading website company that has been handling the personal website of Aamir shall now be doing the Ghajini film website. Aamir we have learnt has been giving his creative inputs for the same which include a specially shot promo just for the website. Internet savvy Aamir knows power of the e-medium in today’s times very well and he is confident that a stronger buzz will be created through it. Aamir has been interacting a lot through his personal website with his fans across the globe and he wants to use the Ghajini website as a platform to multiply his fan base and in turn also promote his film. This also involves less money as video promos online are practically free of cost and the producer doesn’t have to shell a lot of money from his pocket to constantly showcase his film’s promos on television channels. The official promotion of the film is set to begin around Diwali time that’s in October end. Aamir intends to get website for the film ready by that time. There are also chances of starting a mobile phone website for the film as well. If it happens then Ghajini probably shall be the first Bollywood film to have a mobile website!"

"I will kill Gauri Khan" - Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan made a shocking statement quite recently. She declared her love for Shah Rukh Khan and even went on to state that for him, she would be even willing to kill Gauri Khan. However, it is quite obvious that she said so in light humor as all this chit-chat happened on the ‘Sajid Superstars’ show! - On being asked about her crush, Vidya Balan didn’t bat an eyelid as she only mentioned one name - Shah Rukh Khan! When warned by Sajid Khan that Gauri Khan could well be watching the show, she confessed that for getting the man of her dreams, she would even be willing to kill Gauri Khan! - She did mention her disappointment though for missing out on being even nominated for Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Though she gave her heart, body and soul for the role of a woman possessed and saw some critical and commercial acclaim for the film, she was left perplexed when award functions ignored her completely. In fact one of her scenes from the film even made it to the best scenes selected by Sajid Khan. - Her worst scene was an embarrassment for her though as a sequence from her tele-serial ‘Hum Paanch’, which was aired years back on TV. No wonder, she was red faced all through the duration as the scene played. - There was some more fun in store as she was asked to choose her favorite between designers Manish Malhotra and Aki Narula. For the uninitiated, there is no love lost between Vidya and the two designers, hence the query holds on quite some relevance. - She also mentioned about how uncomfortable she was about the thought of enacting a love making scene with Sanjay Dutt for Parineeta. In fact a few weeks back, even Sanjay Dutt had mentioned that it was quite strange to shoot for the scene since director Pradeep Sarkar insisted in dozens of retakes before the scene was finally canned! - However, Vidya admits that Sanjay Dutt made it all comfortable for her and in the end she didn’t have any hesitation to continue with the shoot. Just like the major part of the industry which loves Sanju baba, even Vidya couldn’t help singing praises for her co-stars whom she truly believes has a heart of gold.
